Job Description

Join our Bank Technology Team!

As an Engineering Manager, you will have three key areas of responsibilities, that of People Leadership, Asset Management / Health and Supporting Delivery.

People Leadership

  • Lead a team of technology engineers and professionals across sophisticated multi-squad technical, regulatory, or other cross-cutting initiatives.
  • Perform reviews, conduct tactical and stretch goal setting.
  • Hire for technology team members.
  • Develop the skills and growth of team members through mentorship, training, and providing opportunities within the program.
  • Foster team engagement, and handle performance issues in a diligent and appropriate manner.

Asset Ownership and Health

  • Own the overall health of the technical asset(s) in its entirety.
  • Develop, maintain and implement the assets technical roadmaps in alignment with Manulife’s technology strategy.
  • Handle and resolve issues and risks as applicable.
  • Partner with Product collaborators on prioritization; influencing PO to align with Asset Ownership and Health.
  • Management and governance for technology vendors, and support the business collaborators for technical subsets of business assets.
  • Develop patterns and documentation to ensure ongoing maintenance of technical and regulatory solutions.
  • Evaluate and define existing technology standards to ensure compliance with program-level requirements.

Enabling Delivery

  • Ensure progress against important breakthroughs.
  • Active participant in planning discussions, providing input on technical solutions, decision making, and direction.
  • Point of escalation for technical issues if cannot be solved by asset team, squad or scrum lead.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with other engineering managers and Product partners on interdependent technology work.
  • Maintain a perspective on impact of change on patterns required for implementation.
  • Work with partner teams to redesign technology (i.e., release management) process flows when necessary


What we are looking for:

  • 2+ years experience within a technology leadership role
  • Strong technical/development skills or experience working in a technical environment
  • financial institution experience an asset
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to handle and lead multiple initiatives across multiple teams
  • Responds well to ambiguity and works efficiently to clarify situations and outcomes
  • Awareness of cloud technology, and experience implementing in cloud infrastructure (Azure preferably)
  • general knowledge of technology stacks
  • Collaborative attitude, willingness to work with team members; able to mentor, participate in code reviews, support or drive design sessions
  • Constantly learns from both success and failure
  • Good problem-solving skills that enable you to lead through creative abrasion
  • Good verbal and written communication; able to optimally articulate technical vision, possibilities and outcomes

Salary & Benefits

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Primary Location

Waterloo, Ontario

Salary range is expected to be between

$89,950.00 CAD - $167,050.00 CAD

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
