SRY Engineering Services ensures the safety of our rail-based infrastructure through our maintenance programs which are responsible for the inspection, repair and maintenance of all track, bridges and crossings.

In addition to our responsibility to deliver a high standard of inspection and maintenance, SRY is committed to continually improving the infrastructure and the performance of our rail network through capital upgrades. SRY commits approximately $6,000,000 annually towards upgrades and expansion to our existing plant.

The chosen candidate will report to the Senior Manager of Engineering Services and be responsible for assisting the Manager of Track, Chief Engineer, and Engineering Technologist in delivering the Engineering and Maintenance of Way programme of work, including the planning and execution of maintenance, capital and billable Projects included in the Engineering Budget in the Track, Bridges, Signals and Crossings disciplines. This chosen candidate will also manage Engineering Inventory and day-to-day management of SRY’s movable structures. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Core Responsibilities:

  • Undertake day-to-day site supervision on Engineering Construction Projects;
  • Supervise and manage the activities of MOW crews, track inspectors, and hi-rail operations;
  • Undertake day-to-day management of SRY’s movable structures, including bridgetender and sliptender assignments;
  • Provide coaching to Employees and direction to Consultants and Contractors through regular monitoring of Employee and Project performance; and
  • Ensure compliance with safe work procedures, Transport Canada guidelines, and SRY policies and procedures by undertaking proficiency testing and auditing.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Supervise inspection schedules, recommend preventive maintenance, and repair programs for track systems and equipment to ensure their safe and efficient operation;
  • Manage logistical aspects of material purchases;
  • Manage all Engineering inventory, working with finance on inventory counts;
  • Establish and maintain good relations with Consultants, Contractors and Suppliers;
  • Oversee and inspect work performed by Railway Consultants and Contractors;
  • Assist in producing rail designs, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, tender documents, material procurement, purchase orders and RFQs for railway related capital projects and maintenance programs as needed;
  • Respond to emergent situations such as injuries, crossing incidents, derailments, storms etc.;
  • The ability to complete accurate, detailed inspections of SRY’s track, turnout, bridge and crossing infrastructure would be considered an asset for the candidate; and
  • The ability to undertake the engineering technical review of proposed overhead and underground crossings would be considered an asset for the candidate.

The Person

The successful candidate shall possess:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in railway engineering, maintenance-of-way or adjacent field;
  • Previous experience undertaking day-to-day site supervision of Engineering Projects;
  • CROR qualification, or the ability to become CROR qualified within 3 months of starting employment;
  • A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management or Quantity Surveying discipline or an Engineering Technologist diploma would be considered an asset;
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D would be considered an asset;
  • A valid BC class 5 (full privilege) driver’s licence is required;
  • Proficiency in MS Office is required; Excellent communication, planning, problem solving and analytical skills;
  • A positive attitude and commitment to being an active participant of the team, working with both management and unionized staff;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop strong business relationships, as well as working effectively with cross-functional teams is essential;
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills;
  • The ability to maintain productivity under pressure and changing conditions; and
  • The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced company.

This is a management position with an expected total compensation package of $100,000 to $120,000 per annum depending upon experience and is in addition to benefits. All new hires will be required to undergo reference, pre-employment medical, criminal record checks and for applicable jobs, credit check inquiry.

The successful candidate will be located in the Metro Vancouver or Fraser Valley areas upon commencing employment, with an ability and willingness to travel locally within the Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island areas being required for the position.
