Job Summary:

We are currently seeking a Family Services - First Nation Representative to join Waterhen Lake Cree Nation in supporting the readiness to exercise our nations jurisdiction over Child and Family Services (CFS), and in developing and delivering responsive Child and Family Service programs and services. The position will be under the supervision of the Waterhen Lake First Nation – Director of Family Services. Additional responsibilities will be provided as advised by the WLFN CFS Project Coordinator, WLFN Leadership, and the WLFN Child Welfare Committee.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the main contact between Waterhen Lake First Nation and external CFS service providers.
  • Ensuring that child and family service providers address the needs of First Nations children, youth, and families.
  • Building and maintaining meaningful cultural, family, and community connections for First Nations children, youth, and families involved with the child welfare system.
  • Facilitating the reunification of First Nations children and youth in care with their family and Waterhen Lake First Nation.
  • Supporting First Nations children, youth, and families involved/at-risk of involvement with the child and family services system outside of their home communities, including working across other regions and cross jurisdictions.
  • Participating and accessing legal resources and advise to represent the Waterhen Lake First Nations children, youth and families interests with administrative and court proceedings.
  • Receiving and responding to notices under provincial, territorial, and federal Child & Family Services policies, laws, and mandates.
  • Helping children, youth, and families access culturally responsive and appropriate prevention programming and support services.
  • Supporting customary care; kinship care, and alternative care arrangements in Waterhen Lake First Nation or surrounding communities.
  • Providing or arranging alternative dispute resolution processes for children, youth, and families involved with Waterhen Lake First Nation’s CFS team.
  • Participating in the development and monitoring of services plans with CFS providers (safety planning, permanency planning, after care plans, youth transition/ post-majority care plans).
  • Complete and submit program internal and external reporting, as necessary.
  • Participate in overall policy development and decision making as a member of the Waterhen Lake First Nation Child Welfare Committee.
  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with First Nations Representative policies and practices as designated by Indigenous Services Canada.
  • Manage First Nations Representative budgets and expenditures.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • University Degree and/or Diploma in a related field such as Social Work, Indigenous Social Work, Health, Justice Studies, or Mental Health and Wellness.
  • Strong planning, community mobilization and inter-cultural communication.
  • Prior experience within human services (2+ Years).
  • Prior experience in administration and coordination (2+ Years).
  • Excellent organization, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Strong commitment and adherence to confidentiality.
  • Able to work efficiently as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Current CPIC and Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Knowledge of Waterhen Lake First Nation community programs and services.
  • Knowledge of Bill C-92, An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth, and families.
  • Knowledge of First Nation policies and legislations, Saskatchewan Child and Family Services Act, the FSIN Child Welfare and Family Support Act, and other legislation.
  • Experience in working in First Nations communities (2+ Years).
  • Knowledge and understanding of First Nations issues such as Indian Residential Schools, Sixties Scoop and policy on First Nations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of First Nations Child and Family Services.
  • Knowledge of the Provincial Child and Family Services Act, and Structured Decision-Making (SDM).
  • Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to perform and collaborate under challenging conditions.

Salary: Dependent on Relevant Experience and Education.

Term: Contract available till March 31, 2024, with possibility of extension.
