Job Summary
Athletics and Recreation takes a holistic approach to enhancing the Dalhousie experience by creating and sharing ways to engage and connect students through physical activity and wellness, to contribute to student success. Reporting to the Manager, Campus & Community Recreation, the Fitness Coordinator is responsible for the successful administration, provision and delivery of all aspects of group and fee-based fitness classes and programs, personal training and the day-to-day operation of the strength and cardio room, providing a safe, secure and welcoming culture and environment for all participants and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan group fitness classes for members as well as fee-based programs, including personal training. This will include researching current and new fitness opportunities, ensuring space and equipment availability, and scheduling classes.
  • Respond to member, client and staff inquiries. Promptly address member issues, violations of acceptable use policies, interpersonal conflicts, security issues, and medical emergencies.
  • Ensure all safety measures are in place and are followed for classes and programs as well as ensure the safe operation of the fitness hall for members and staff. Where necessary, determine program participation restrictions and/or pre-requisites to meet safety requirements.
  • Hire, train, schedule, supervise and coach a large staff contingent, ranging from approximately 50 to 80 casual staff depending on program offerings and time of year. Staff will include certified group fitness and program instructors, certified personal trainers, and fitness hall monitors.
  • Develop and monitor annual fitness unit budget. Calculate program fees and required enrolment numbers to ensure revenue targets are met. Set program schedules to ensure maximum revenue generation. Maintain accurate and up-to-date program and class statistics to make informed decisions.
  • Research and provide advice regarding required equipment based on factors such as current use, space availability, the needs of all members of various abilities and ages, and new and trending equipment.

Note
Hours of work will be Mon – Fri and may fall between 10:00am – 6:00pm pending operation requirements and in accordance with the collective agreement.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in related field such as Kinesiology, plus approximately three to five years’ progressive and relevant experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Recognized certification in Personal Training, Group Exercise Leader, Older Adult Fitness Leader, Indoor Cycling Leader, Mind and Body Exercise Leader as well as CPR Level C.
  • Experience in program coordination and design.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational and problem-solving skills while working under minimal supervision.
  • Excellent client service, interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Self-motivated with the demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven safety record and commitment to safety.
  • Regular physical effort including lifting and moving equipment up to approximately 20 lbs. and, as required, delivering fitness classes.
