Job Description:

The incumbent plans, organizes and communicates grounds maintenance operations, performs all horticulture duties associated with grounds maintenance. Performs minor repair for all college vehicles. The incumbent may be asked to arrange for vehicles maintenance and repairs. The incumbent monitors, maintains data collection and records management for Woodroffe Campus grounds maintenance and operations as required by municipal, provincial or federal legislation.
Conduct quality assurance inspection of contracted snow removal and horticultural services including spring cleanups, seasonal plantings, mulching, weeding, pruning, general garden maintenance, grass cutting, fall cleanups and other related activities. Install shrubs, perennials and annuals including determining light and water requirements and utilizing colour and texture schemes for optimal aesthetic appeal.
Through inspections and patrolling of the Ottawa Campus exterior landscape, the incumbent monitors the health of the gardens to ensure the plants are healthy at all times. The incumbent responds to present site needs to address snow accumulation, ice control and storm drain backup tripping hazards, catch basin repair associated with roads, parking lots and sidewalk. In addition, the incumbent operates a variety of equipment and performs manual labor required to maintain the roads, parking lots and sidewalks. Inspects and patrols the roads, parking lots and sidewalk.
The incumbent in consultation and collaboration with contract services to assess, prioritize and schedule maintenance and repairs as per college needs and schedule. In addition, the incumbent in consultation with the coordinator will occasionally direct other team members in completing horticultural and other tasks and may assign work to co-op students and ensure that tools and materials needed for maintenance are available.
Required Qualifications:
  • A two (2) year diploma in Horticulture Technician or Landscape Technician or equivalent education in a related field;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience in increasingly responsible roles including:
    • All aspects of grounds and horticulture maintenance and operations;
    • Proven working experience in, ornamental garden and landscape design, construction and maintenance for soft landscaping;
    • Irrigation systems design and maintenance;
    • Quality assurance for roads, sidewalks and site infrastructure, landscape maintenance and snow removal operations.
