As the Head of Tax (reporting to the CFO), you will be responsible for overseeing all tax-related matters (including direct and indirect taxes), with a primary focus on Canadian taxation, a solid understanding of US tax regulations, and strong knowledge of international tax practices. This role requires a deep understanding of Canadian tax laws and regulations, as well as a comprehensive understanding of enterprise practices within the SaaS technology industry.

Responsibilities:

    • Canadian Tax Compliance:
    • Develop and implement tax strategies and policies to ensure compliance with Canadian tax laws and regulations.
    • Review and oversee tax compliance activities, including the preparation and filing of tax returns, tax incentive submissions (e.g. SR&ED) and related documentation.
    • Monitor changes in Canadian tax legislation and advise the company on potential implications and opportunities.

    • US Taxation:
    • Provide guidance and support in understanding and complying with US tax regulations relevant to the company's global entities.
    • Collaborate with external advisors to ensure accurate and timely filing of US tax returns and compliance with reporting requirements.
    • Analyze the impact of US tax regulations on the company's operations and global tax planning.

    • International Taxation:
    • Maintain a basic understanding of international tax principles and regulations and provide oversight guidance for international tax planning.
    • Collaborate with external international tax advisors, where appropriate, to support the company's tax compliance and global tax planning initiatives.
    • Assist in evaluating the tax implications of cross-border transactions and global operations.

    • Tax Planning, Strategy, and Operations:
    • Develop and implement tax planning strategies to optimize the company's tax position.
    • Provide guidance on tax-efficient structuring of acquisitions, divestitures, and other transactions.
    • Identify tax-saving opportunities and potential risks while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
    • Evaluate the Company's global tax situation and provide advice on strategies to optimize results.
    • Work closely with Corporate Development, Business, Legal, and Finance departments on tax matters relating to acquisitions and transactions. Oversee acquisition tax due diligence and structural planning, and ensure that deals are structured in the most tax advantageous way and that tax implications are considered.
    • Lead process improvement within the tax disciplines.

    • Transfer Pricing:
    • Oversee and manage transfer pricing strategies, ensuring compliance with local and international regulations.
    • Collaborate with internal teams and external advisors to develop and implement transfer pricing policies.
    • Monitor and review transfer pricing documentation to support intercompany transactions.

    • Tax Provision Reporting and Audits:
    • Prepare and review tax provisions and disclosures for financial statements.
    • Coordinate and manage tax audits, inquiries, and disputes with tax authorities.
    • Collaborate with internal teams to lead audit management and defense, gather necessary information for tax audits and resolve any issues that arise.

    • Stakeholder Management:
    • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders, including finance, legal, and executive teams, to ensure tax considerations are integrated into business decisions.
    • Collaborate with external advisors, tax authorities, and regulatory bodies to address any tax-related queries or issues.

Requirements:

    • CA required.
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
    • A master's degree or professional certification (e.g., CPA) and completion of the CPA in-depth tax course is preferred.
    • Significant experience (8+ years) in tax planning and compliance, preferably within the SaaS technology industry.
    • Extensive experience in managing a multi-functional tax department
    • Extensive knowledge of Canadian taxation laws and regulations.
    • Familiarity with US tax regulations and international tax principles is essential.
    • Familiarity with global indirect tax matters including Canadian Provincial and US State sales and use taxes, is essential.
    • Experience managing tax audits and disputes with tax authorities.
    • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex tax issues and propose practical solutions.
    • Results-oriented professional, demonstrated ability to impact financial performance through the utilization of innovative and lawful tax strategies which minimize local, federal and international tax burdens for the Company.
    • Strong federal and multi-state income tax and transactional tax background.
    • Strong background of GAAP accounting and reporting requirements.
    • Experience with international tax planning and compliance.
    • Excellent communications and influencing skills with a demonstrated ability to build relationships with senior and executive leaders, internally and externally.
    • Ability to work with a variety of constituencies, including domestic and international taxing authorities and outside tax professionals.
    • Proven track record of implementing change through strong project management skills .
