Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy is seeking applications for an Islamic Studies

Teacher/Coordinator Position for September 1, 2021

Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy is part of a beautiful multi-million dollar complex complete with a

mosque, classrooms, and a full-size gymnasium. Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy teaches the B.C.

curriculum in an Islamic setting and is a Group 1 classification of Independent schools under the

Ministry of Education guidelines. The school opened its doors for the first time in September

2003 and currently offers a Junior Kindergarten preschool and Kindergarten to Grade 9

education.

Please see job description below for an Islamic Coordinator:

The role of the Islamic coordinator will be to create a positive Islamic environment at the school

that will engender a strong foundation of Islam and the ability to interact as proud Muslims

within society. The role will include developing programs, initiatives, resources and managing

existing programs in Islamic studies and Qur’anic Arabic.

The details of the role are outlined

below.

Islamic Studies

  • Teach the Islamic studies classes between grades 5-9.

  • Acquire resources needed to teach Islamic studies for grades 5-9

  • Support the Islamic studies teachers in delivering the IS curriculum.

  • Deliver some of the bulugh talks for grades 3-9.

Qur’anic Arabic

  • Teach the Qur’anic Arabic classes between grade 5-7.

  • Acquire the resources required to teach Qur’anic Arabic.

Salat

  • Implement the program for practically teaching the rituals and philosophies of

salah for grades 5-9

  • Provide resources to salat teaches for grades 1-4

Core classes

  • Coordinate with religious scholar to facilitate professional development for

teachers on Islamic philosophies and requirements of education whenever

necessary.

  • Support core teachers and provide guidance in managing an Islamic environment

and content within the classroom.

  • Support core teachers in managing an Islamic environment on field trips and other

outdoor sessions.

Special events

  • Develop some special events and environment at the school to increase attachment

to the faith and create a strong Islamic identity, including commemorations and

celebrations.

  • Develop the performance night program along with admin and staff at the school.

  • Support in developing the grad camp for Islamic content.

  • Support the teachers in providing the Islamic content to the science night

presentations.

Parental engagement

  • In coordination with religious scholar, develop 2 - 3 parent information sessions

pertaining to faith or faith-based education.

  • Involve parents as volunteers in developing the spiritual and religious events at

the school.

Library and reading material

  • Work with librarian to ensure that all books and resources offered at the library

are aligned with the values and beliefs of Islam.

  • Suggest books and resources that will enhance the Islamic resources at the

Library.

  • Work with teachers to ensure that books and multimedia used in class and kept in

class are aligned with the values and beliefs of Islam.

  • Provide guidance on how to speak to students about the contents of a book or a

resource when and if required.

The following qualifications would be an asset:

  • BC Professional Teacher Certification from the BC Teacher Regulation Office

  • A strong background in Shia Islam and Islamic pedagogy is required in this position.

Candidates may also meet this requirement by enrolling in a recognized program for

continuing Islamic education.

  • Knowledge of pedagogy including instructional strategies, theory of teaching

literacy/numeracy, and child development is essential.

  • Desire to work collaboratively with an energetic and enthusiastic team
