About the role

We are offering an 8-months internship opportunity our Health & Safety Environment team in Kitimat - BC at Rio Tinto Aluminium group facility. Please note that you will have to relocate to Kitimat for this internship.

The Intern will be responsible for the following:

  • Industrial hygiene exposure assessments, data entry, analysis and report writing, including:
    • Sampling for chemical, biological, physical, and ergonomic hazards
    • Working with laboratories (shipping samples, sample consultation, results review and input)
  • Laboratory preparation of sample materials (calibrating, weighing, cassette preparation)
  • Communication of sampling results to area management and affected employees
  • Hazardous material risk assessment and management
  • Confined space hazard assessments
  • Health management program review, including updating and communicating policies and training packages
  • Auditing, Legal compliance and application of corporate standards
  • Working with area management and employees to mitigate at-risk situations
  • Involvement in health-related incident investigations
  • Project opportunities exist within any of the aforementioned tasks. The candidate, Industrial Hygiene Team Lead, and university project supervisors will pick the most suitable project for the candidate.

Your contribution

  • At least one year completed in a master’s level Industrial Hygiene program orcompletion of undergraduate science laboratory-based courses
  • Fundamental understanding of industrial hygiene principles and sampling methodologies
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team and independently
  • Good computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Office and PowerPoint. Ability to perform statistical analysis is an asset
  • Integrity & Leadership skills
  • Eagerness to learn and ready for the challenge ahead
  • Driver’s license

Rio Tinto’s BC Works is a part of the Atlantic Operations of the Aluminum product group and has been operating in British Columbia for over 65 years. With industry leading new technology and four generations of employee expertise, as well as our hydropower facility at Kemano and the Nechako Reservoir, the Kitimat smelter is one of the world’s most competitive aluminum smelters, producing aluminum with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry.
