About the Position
ADM Milling Co. is actively searching for a knowledgeable and self-motivated quality control laboratory technician (Operator 1) with a food science background to join the team in Port Colborne, Ontario. This position reports to the Quality & Food Safety Manager. The incumbent will perform routine quality control testing of all incoming raw materials, in process samples, and finished products to ensure the product meet the quality specification, maintain accurate and complete test records, investigate and troubleshoot as problems arise and communicate quality information effectively both internally to the team and externally to the customers when required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prioritize safety in all daily activities
  • Perform activities in the flour and wheat laboratories
  • Analyze wheat and flour using laboratory instruments and internal SOPs
  • Calibrate the instruments and conduct basic troubleshooting if needed
  • Prepare chemical reagents and maintain stock
  • Perform activities in the baking laboratory
  • Conduct baking tests using the dry bakery mixes using laboratory baking equipment and internal SOPs
  • Approve incoming ingredients for the bakery mix plant
  • Enter results accurately into internal forms and computer systems
  • Monitor testing results are being in compliance with the product safety and quality requirements. Release the product for shipping
  • Place non-conforming product on hold. Initiate investigation process
  • Communicate non-conforming results and/or other concerns immediately to the production and Quality and Food Safety teams and follow up on the issues
  • Clean instruments/equipment and work area on a daily basis
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all health & safety, food safety, environmental, and GMP rules, regulations, and policies
  • Assist other production departments during scheduled shut down for sanitation and cleaning purposes
  • Perform other duties and tasks related to the product safety and quality

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Effective communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • Basic knowledge of GMP and HACCP
  • Experience in testing cereal grains using AACC methods, Farinograph, Amylograph, Falling Number Machine and NIR would be an asset

The ideal candidate is a quick learner with strong decision making, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. High attention to details, ability to prioritize activities, multi-task, and work in a fast paced environment are required. Ability to work effectively in a team and independently with minimal supervision are critical.

Education or Work Experience

  • Post-secondary education in food chemistry or food science and relevant work experience or a minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a related food processing industry with a focus on product safety and quality in a laboratory environment

Additional Information
Physical requirements of the job include ability to climb stairs, lift up to 55 lbs, being capable to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Working on weekends and state holidays will be required.
