Role Proposition:
Do you enjoy working outdoors in fresh mountain air? We are seeking a motivated and experienced Trail Crew Lead Hand to join our team for the summer season. As the lead hand, you will coordinate and supervise a team of trail crew members, ensuring that trail maintenance and construction projects are completed efficiently and safely. You will be responsible for daily task delegation, record keeping, equipment maintenance, team safety compliance, and various maintenance and landscaping tasks across the resort. You will also be a Sun Peaks Resort Initial Fire Attack Crew member. Bike parks, golf rounds and lake days await you on your days off. Accountabilities:

  • Meet with staff at the start of each day and review the work list, identify priorities, and then delegate tasks to the crew
  • Lead and document the morning safety meeting and review equipment needs, vehicle assignments, special instructions, PPE requirements, mountain information updates, weather, concerns, successes, etc., setting daily completion goals
  • Maintain crew equipment in top working order (Quads, Side-by-sides, fire pumps, etc.) and ensure that appropriate action is taken to repair your tools
  • Daily progress tracking of work to ensure timely completion of the task before starting another
  • Daily record keeping, including vehicle check sheets, creek checks, reservoir checks, fuel logs, drainage inventory, etc.
  • Monitor work being done to ensure that all WorkSafe regulations and SOGs are followed daily and ensure that the crew is aware of safety concerns in and around the area they are working
  • Be current with S100 Fire Suppression Training and be part of Sun Peaks Resort Initial Fire Attack Crew
  • Jobs may include but are not limited to; run maintenance (re-vegetation, clearing, brushing, maintaining run-off structures, signage, and improvements), cattle control (building and maintaining smooth wire fences, electric fences, gates, and cattle herding), landscaping (general maintenance and improvement of lawns, and general resort beautification), erosion control, hiking trail sign installation and maintenance, and ski run sign maintenance
  • Ensure the crew knows departmental and company goals, timelines, and objectives
  • Prompt return to work after breaks from work. (Any food or supplies required for breaks will be taken to the worksite since breaks will be from the time work stops until the time it starts again and does not include travel time)
  • To assist other departments when required
  • To treat co-workers and company equipment with the utmost respect
  • Communicate problems, issues or “near misses” with your Manager/Supervisor as soon as possible
  • Report Accidents or Incidents to your Manager/Supervisor immediately; and be available to assist with investigations if necessary
  • Arrive at work on time and completely prepared for working outside in all conditions (proper footwear, clothing, food/water, rain gear, PPE, and well-rested)
  • Ensure that staff has signed in and out of the ADP System every workday
  • Other jobs as assigned by the Slopes Manager

Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience working outside in a trail building or landscaping setting an asset
  • Mature person with a solid work ethic and interpersonal skills
  • A team player, self-motivated, with proven leadership skills and the ability to motivate others
  • Able to think, react and communicate under pressure
  • Excellent working knowledge of Sun Peak’s physical plant and summer operations
  • A good listener, able to follow instructions closely
  • Excellent time management and planning skills
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Must have a keen eye for close detail while still dealing with a more extensive scope
  • Able to complete daily reports neatly, concisely, and legibly
  • Willing and prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must be in good physical shape, able to undertake constant hard physical work, and able to safely lift heavy objects
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and clean abstract
  • Experienced operating Quads and SideXSides, an asset
  • “Hands-on” supervisor experience who leads by example
  • Previous Wild Fire Suppression experience with valid S-100 certificate and OFA-1 an Asset
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule (weekends and holidays) as required by summer operating hours, special events and Fire Danger Rating
  • Supply own CSA approved above ankle footwear, sunscreen and appropriate clothing
