Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director, Paul Menton Centre (PMC), the Learning Strategy and Assistive Technology Officer is responsible for assessing the individual needs of students with disabilities and providing appropriate learning strategy guidance and/or recommendations on assistive technology devices, hardware and software to best assist students in meeting their academic goals.

The Learning Strategy and Assistive Technology Officer will work individually with PMC students to help them acquire compensatory learning strategies, including the use of assistive learning technology, and develop self-advocacy. As appropriate, he/she will direct students to on-and off-campus services to augment individual support. The Learning Support Coordinator will also act for the benefit of students with disabilities by educating and communicating with faculty, support staff, and others in the broader community.

The incumbent will promote awareness of the needs of students with disabilities, and maintain a comprehensive familiarity with university programs and policies.

Qualifications: The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
  • The ability to work efficiently within a team, to develop and improve services.
  • Comfortable working in an independent setting, when interacting with student clients, working on projects, and completing administrative tasks.
  • Thorough knowledge of different learning strategies that may assist students with their time management, notetaking, motivation, etc.
  • The ability to use psycho-educational assessment results for determining adaptive technology needs and instructing/training students effectively
  • Teaching experience in one-on-one and/or group situations including experience designing and facilitating workshops.
  • Strong computer literacy skills with knowledge of a variety of assistive technologies (e.g., Dragon NaturallySpeaking, OneNote, read & write, etc.)
  • Proficient in written and oral communication skills to provide information clearly and effectively to students, staff and faculty.
  • Strong customer service for interacting with students, staff, faculty, parents and members of the broader Carleton community.
  • Demonstrated understanding of accessibility, diversity, equity and inclusion
Education and Experience: The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
  • Four-year bachelor’s degree in Cognitive Science, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Neuroscience, Disability Studies, or Computer Science, as well as certification as a Learning Strategist and Assistive Technologist.
  • Membership and/or involvement with PostSecondary Disability Awareness associations is an asset
  • Training in Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and other relevant or equivalent certifications
  • Minimum three years of experience working as a Learning Strategist and Assistive Technologist with persons representing all disability groups.
