Job Description:

An opportunity currently exists for a Vegetation Management Specialist (VMS), within the Asset Management Department. Reporting to the Manager, Right of Way Maintenance & Construction and under the direction of the Vegetation Management Coordinator (VMC). The successful candidate will assist in the delivery of the vegetation programs in order to support the viability, integrity and safety of the transmission system. The role will require a close working relationship with the Transmission Maintenance Field Operations, Transmission Field Crews and external contractual partners. This role requires a large number of days out of the office and nights away from home.

Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Vegetation Management Coordinator the incumbent will:

  • Assist in the management of the vegetation maintenance along rights-of-ways, access to right-of-ways and substation perimeters, city rights-of-ways in order to support the viability, integrity and safety of the transmission system.
  • Assist in the coordination of the maintenance along and to the right-of-ways and substation perimeters, city rights-of-ways in order to support the viability, integrity and safety of the transmission system.
  • Perform field audits of vegetation management contractor crews work for safety & quality control, and accuracy of Transmission Vegetation Management Program (TVMP).
  • Perform quality audit checks on vegetation work completed by contractors, from an AltaLink standards, quality, environmental and safety standpoint.
  • Assist in the emergency repair of the Transmission System. Assist in emergency patrols by ground or air to determine extent of damage.
  • Perform patrols by air or ground and record the results and operational concerns, prioritize, assess risk and make recommendations for repair, maintenance or upgrades to transmission rights-of-ways for both vegetation and access.
  • Liaison with the land department and Indigenous Relations & Consultation department on encroachments violations and landowner concerns.
  • Manage stakeholder complaints and inquiries to ensure they are resolved quickly in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Assist in obtaining the appropriate permits and letters of authorization on public lands.
  • Consenting and landowner notifications for right of way maintenance operations.
  • Assist with inspections on transmission facilities with regards to vegetation during and after construction, acceptance and commissioning.
  • Assist in preliminary review of design packages with regard to vegetation standards, quality control and future maintainability.
  • Assist in updating maintenance plans and schedules for new and existing facilities.
  • Assist in tracking invoices and expenditures.
  • Updating of maintenance items in data bases.
  • Incident reporting accidents, safety issues, non conformance issues.
  • Representation of transmission right-of-way group at appropriate conferences, working groups and meetings.
  • Work with field operations, projects and standards in the development of standards and procedures to support vegetation maintenance.
  • Assist in research, evaluation and recommend new tools, test equipment, materials and practices.
  • Assist the Vegetation Management Coordinator as required.

Qualifications:

  • IVMAA; Certified Utility Tree Trimmer or Utility Tree Worker.
  • ISA Certified Utility Arborist / Utility Specialist would be an asset.
  • Alberta Pesticide Applicators License or similar experience would be an asset to the position or similar experience.
  • Minimum 5 years utility vegetation maintenance experience.
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
  • The level of education to perform this job is equivalent to completion of a formalized post-secondary education or diploma-training program at a university, college or technical school.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Competent in reading and interpreting plans and construction packages.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Background in dealing with land use issues, rights of way etc. with public stakeholders.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes.
  • Proven track record of good attendance and performance.

  • Land reclamation
