Manager of Risk and Insurance, Office of Procurement, Contract and Risk

Responsibilities

Reporting to theAssociate Vice-President of Finance, the successful candidate’s key responsibilities include identifying, evaluating and monitoring exposures to risk including recommending alternative risk control techniques; and providing advice, guidance and training to the University on risk management and insurance issues. The successful candidate will:

  • Provide guidance to University leaders and employees regarding risk management best practices;
  • Recommend and assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of risk management policies and procedures;
  • Provide support within the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework, tools and procedures to achieve successful risk identification and management within best practice standards;
  • Manage the annual review of insurance requirements and related services; investigate and recommend new coverage as required; prepare reports recommending insurance policy renewals and proposed changes in coverage, limits and/or deductibles, and issues of concern;
  • Oversee processing of insurance incidents and claims in conjunction with the University’s General Counsel;
  • Advise in the overall strategic direction of risk management in promoting a strong risk awareness culture in keeping with the observed risks and claims experience at both the University and among Canadian universities typically;
  • Manage the Placement/Internships/Coop/Experiential Learning portfolios which may include reviewing agreements protecting the students and University indemnifications, supervisors, insurance requirements, risk mitigations;
  • Lead the University’s insurance program, for the negotiation and purchase of insurance policies, providing property and casualty advice on matters relating to the insurance program, providing direction, coaching, training, tracking important changes on property holdings and inventories for valuation purposes and for identifying and recommending program improvements;
  • Coordinate loss prevention inspections as required by insurers (e.g. Boiler and Building Inspection), attend meetings between units and inspectors, follow-up and report regarding action items;
  • Manage the Travel/Domestic/International portfolios including all documentation, health coverage, mitigation of the plans, visits, accommodations, transportation, SOS training, personal vacation;
  • Review research contracts indemnifications and insurance clauses to assure compliance;
  • Track and keep all current and expired placement agreements and facility-use contracts signed off by university officials for archive purposes, this may also include all certificates of insurance in the event that proof of insurance becomes a matter of litigation;
  • Solicit quotations for all insurance coverage required of the university in order to protect its assets and people from bodily injury, property damage, errors or omissions or legal liabilities;
  • Ensure risk management mitigations for events, both on campus and off campus;
  • Support the various student associations as well as Student Success offices in order to identify potential risks and contingency plans, this may also include providing advice, training and guidance;
  • Demonstrate collegiality in their interactions, are comfortable collaborating with others and are able to build consensus. They understand and respect the priorities and vision articulated by the institution and will work collaboratively to translate that vision into strategies, policies and programs that will enable the organization to achieve its strategic objectives.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • University degree in a related discipline (Economics, Business Administration, Commerce, etc.);
  • Must possess accredited designation of either Certified Risk Manager (CRM) or Certified Insurance Professional (CIP) or both;
  • A minimum of five years of related progressive experience in risk management and commercial insurance;
  • Ability to work fluently, orally and in writing, in both official languages, French and English;
  • Practical experience from a risk management perspective within a business or educational setting in order to understand the fundamentals and merits of risk assumption, risk transfer, risk finance, risk mitigation and risk avoidance, a definite asset;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, standards and practices of risk management, including torts and contracts as well as the insurance industry and claims management practices;
  • Experience working within a mid-sized to large organization to develop the skills necessary to work with and communicate to others the merits of risk management related techniques, information and practices that build successful outcomes;
  • A demonstrated strong track record of progressive leadership in a multi-stakeholder organization with the ability to demonstrate professional confidence and rational decision-making, building credibility through your approach, ideas and advice;
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results through engagement and collaboration;
  • Well-developed organizational, time management, prioritization and accuracy skills;
  • Knowledge of the following acts and policies is required: the Criminal Code of Canada, Highway Traffic Act, Liquor License Act, Residential Tenancies Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Trespass to Property Act and the Ontario Fire Code; including other University policies;
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office products, G Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro.

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.



Effective May 1, 2022 the Policy and Program on COVID-19 Vaccination are placed in abeyance. This means the Policy and Program on COVID-19 Vaccination are paused at this time; however, they are not canceled and could be reinstated at a future date if public health conditions warrant it, or through guidance from federal, provincial or local public health authorities. The evolution of the virus and the course of the disease activity are difficult to predict and it may be necessary to reinstate the Policy in full or in part, on short notice. When the Policy and Program on COVID-19 Vaccination are paused, persons entering Laurentian’s campus will no longer be required to provide proof of vaccination in order to attend campus.
