Job Description:

Sun Life is looking for someone to join our climate team to support the establishment of our scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions inventory and reporting in close collaboration with our Director of Scope 3 Emissions. Our ideal candidate is passionate about climate change and has direct experience working in carbon accounting and emissions reporting. The successful candidate will work with operational and investment-related data owners across the organization to understand our full scope 3 carbon footprint and expand Sun Life’s reporting capabilities along its value chain. The individual will also support the creation of greenhouse gas emissions reductions roadmaps and the development of a Climate Transition Plan to drive achievement of the company’s broader net zero objectives.

Our climate team acts as a central resource across the business, managing the development of emissions reductions targets and roadmap implementation in collaboration with our International Sustainability Council (ISC) and business representatives, monitoring performance against targets, and delivering on enterprise-wide emissions reporting. The team leads the work to embed environmental practices into our business, driving positive impact. Supporting the team’s efforts is a network of sustainability champions from different business groups and regions in which we operate.

What will you do?

  • Work across the climate change team to enhance the organization’s scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions inventory by:
    • Assessing data quality of currently reported scope 3 emissions categories
    • Understanding emerging emissions reporting requirements from regulatory agencies
    • Establishing a strategic approach to reporting across relevant scope 3 categories with particular focus on financed emissions
    • Engaging with stakeholders to collect and collate key reporting data
    • Driving process improvements and automation of data collection and computation
  • Assist in developing decarbonization roadmaps with business groups and functional teams
  • Create materials to support internal and external communications of climate plans
  • Engage with external stakeholders and represent Sun Life at sustainability events to gather information and bring best practices to the organization
  • Project manage sustainability initiatives as required

What you need to succeed?

  • Proficiency in carbon accounting, specifically the Greenhouse Gas Protocol; experience with the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) is a plus
  • Experience with greenhouse gas emissions reporting and assurance processes
  • Knowledge of the climate change discipline including decarbonization strategies, science-based targets, and ESG reporting and disclosures
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; detail and numbers oriented
  • Organized and self-motivated with the ability to handle competing priorities and deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong stakeholder management and change management skills
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a sustainability-related role. Financial services experience is a plus

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
