Position Description

The Donor Relations, Stewardship & Communications department provides services and experiences that deepen donor engagement with Sunnybrook. The Manager, Stewardship, under the leadership of the Executive Director, Donor Communications, Impact & Accountability will oversee all aspects of stewardship and donor recognition, providing strategic guidance to a team of professionals.

The incumbent will work closely with members of the Philanthropy, Community Engagement, Donor Relations & Communications and Knowledge & Systems teams to oversee gift acceptance and acknowledgement, donor recognition, donor communications and report, donor events and experiences, and other stewardship activities.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Understand the Sunnybrook brand, strategic direction of the Foundation and hospital priorities
  • Acquire, maintain and share knowledge and understanding of the organization and all projects and programs funded by the Foundation
  • Remain abreast of best practices in the field with respect to donor recognition and stewardship
  • Oversee, mentor and manage the workflow and performance of a team of five professionals
  • Ensure that all obligations outlined in donor agreements are fulfilled in a timely manner, and monitored and tracked in Raiser’s Edge
  • Collaborate with the Executive Directors, Philanthropy to develop and execute stewardship strategies for major donors
  • Oversee the preparation of gift agreements for endowments and other major gifts
  • Ensure gift acknowledgement and donor recognition policies and guidelines are consistently reviewed and updated for best practices
  • Manage the donor naming opportunities inventory for physical space in the Hospital and oversee all naming opportunities including spaces, named funds, Chairs etc.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager, Donor Communications on print and electronic communications to and about the impact of donor giving
  • Manage the preparation and delivery of stewardship and fund reports to approximately 350 donors annually
  • Oversee the coordination of donor recognition events with the Manager, Events
  • Define, create, review and implement processes
  • Work in collaboration with the Executive Director to devise annual business and operational plans
  • Provide direction in the information, analyses and reporting on all team activities
  • Uses vital metrics to achieve higher retention rates and donor satisfaction. Tracking metrics to assess donors' current engagement and activity to determine which efforts have the most significant business impact.
  • Perform other duties as needed

  • Ability to understand donor needs and to think strategically about donor engagement
  • Effective manager with the proven ability to manage multiple projects over varying timelines, demonstrating excellence in prioritization and problem-solving
  • Intellectual curiosity and possess an innate desire to learn and lead change
  • Analytical and problem solving skills and proven ability to research and summarize information
  • Understanding of current and emerging best practices in stewardship and donor engagement

Position Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education
  • 5+ years of progressive stewardship and donor relations experience, preferably in a healthcare or other complex organization
  • 2+ years of management experience
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent writing, communication and research skills required to convey clear and concise information
  • Work comfortably in a highly collaborative environment; manage competing interests and strong personalities
  • Sound judgement, tact and diplomacy
  • Demonstrated data-mindset, with strong analytical skills
  • Experience with major gift fundraising programs, donors and volunteers
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software suite including Outlook or similar scheduling software
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge, project management software and Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator an asset and an ability to learn new software quickly
  • CFRE designation considered an asset
