We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Network Administrator to join our team. As a Network Administrator, you will be responsible for managing, maintaining, and securing our organization's computer networks. You will play a vital role in ensuring the uninterrupted operation of our network infrastructure and optimizing its performance. This position requires a strong technical background, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
Core Accountabilities
Responsibilities
  • Network Infrastructure Management: Design, configure, and maintain local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and other network components to ensure optimal performance and availability.
  • Network Security: Implement and manage network security measures to protect against unauthorized access, viruses, malware, and other potential threats. Regularly update and maintain firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and other security devices.
  • Network Troubleshooting and Support: Monitor network performance and proactively identify and resolve network-related issues. Provide technical support to end-users for network connectivity, VPNs, routers, switches, and other network devices.
  • Network Upgrades and Expansion: Evaluate and recommend network hardware, software, and infrastructure upgrades to enhance efficiency, reliability, and security. Plan and implement network expansion projects as needed.
  • Network Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and up-to-date network documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and security policies. Prepare reports on network performance, availability, and security incidents.
  • Network Monitoring and Optimization: Utilize network monitoring tools to track network traffic, identify bottlenecks, and optimize network performance. Implement network performance tuning measures and capacity planning strategies.
  • User Training and Education: Conduct training sessions and create user guides to educate employees on network usage, security best practices, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Vendor Management: Collaborate with vendors and service providers to procure network equipment, manage service contracts, and ensure timely resolution of network-related issues.
  • Compliance and Policy Enforcement: Ensure compliance with company policies, industry regulations and data protection standards. Enforce network usage policies and implement access controls as required.
  • Continual Learning and Professional Development: Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in network administration. Pursue relevant certifications and participate in training programs to enhance knowledge and skills.
Analysis & Administration
  • Apply critical thinking to explore and solve problems logically and consistently.
  • Capture and keep thorough service desk ticket updates for all work conducted.
  • Ensure consistent security and other software patches are applied to all network equipment across the enterprise with regular maintenance windows planned around service uptime requirements.
  • Understand performance requirements and issues, monitoring and responding to alerts and suspicious activity utilizing automated best practices to do so.
  • Apply a passion for learning to adapt to changing technical demands and be well versed in trends and threats to security and performance of networks of all types servicing numerous technology systems.
  • Own the relationship with the relevant vendors who provide services to meet the functions related to all telecommunication, wide area network, local area network and other County networks.
  • Coordinate with vendors to repair and/or replace hardware leveraging maintenance agreements to their fullest potential.
  • Operate with reasonable independence, while ensuring positive, effective client relations.
  • Responsible for asset lifecycle management and contribution to terms of service contracts.
  • Handle all client service requests in a professional, positive, and respectful manner.

  • Display a professional and ethical responsibility to protect privacy, use information appropriately, and maintain the confidentiality and security of all information related to employees, business, and residents of Rocky View County.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Work in accordance with the requirements established by the RVC Health and Safety Program and the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation and Code.
  • Take reasonable care to protect their health and safety and other persons at or in the vicinity of the worksite while they are working.
Position Requirements
An equivalent combination of Post-secondary degree/diploma or equivalent certification in an IT related field with a minimum of five (5) years in-depth Information Technology Network Engineering and Administration services support experience in a technical role preferably in a municipal environment, the Information Technology Network Administrator will:
  • Proven work experience as a Network Administrator or in a similar role.
  • In-depth knowledge of networking protocols, TCP/IP, routing, switching, VPNs, firewalls, and network security concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with network hardware (routers, switches, wireless access points), network monitoring tools, and network management systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex network issues.
  • Familiarity with network performance tuning, capacity planning, and optimization techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with team members and end-users.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Industry certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, or Network+ are preferred.
  • The daily operations responsibilities might include checking logs, auditing processes, solving technical issues that arise from end users and work on projects.
  • Diversified and complex work. Work is sometimes focused upon multiple instructions, objectives, and policies in an often-changing environment.
  • Some “on call” and “maintenance planned outages” work as needed for network maintenance and integrity activities will be required to be performed in off peak hours or in the case of emergency.
  • A clear criminal records check is required.
