Key Responsibilities

  • Assesses inpatient client needs and selects appropriate equipment (for assistive technology) to meet positioning and wheeled mobility needs, considering postural support, alignment, pressure relief, function and safety.
  • Collaborates with clients/families, therapists, OTA/PTA and seating technician to provide safe forms of temporary seating and wheelchairs/specialty strollers for the inpatient stay.
  • Provides education with regards to the safe use of seating and mobility devices
  • Ongoing follow up during the client’s inpatient admission to make changes to the seating or wheeled mobility base as indicated by changes in function or post-op restrictions
  • Oversees repairs and adjustments to seating and mobility devices
  • Assesses and prescribes appropriate seating and wheeled mobility base prior to discharge as required.
  • Provides clinical direction and supervision to the OTA/PTA on the team.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy (or Bachelor degree in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy plus other Masters) required
  • Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario or College of Physiotherapists of Ontario required
  • Experience working in the healthcare field, preferably with children/youth who have a disability
  • Current ADP Registered Authorizer Number (mobility) strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge in seating, mobility and positioning devices and funding resources is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and in a solution focused manner with inpatient clients, families and members of the interprofessional care team
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an inpatient interprofessional team is essential
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and occupational therapy student education
  • Experience with being a positive change agent and quality improvement initiatives is an asset
  • Written and verbal English language communication skills required to effectively communicate with clients, families and members of the interdisciplinary team
  • Proven ability to measure service effectiveness and efficiency
  • Demonstrates ability to organize time and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrates initiative and self-direction
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively and efficiently manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities
  • Proven ability to work with clients and families.
  • Proven ability to be an effective member of an inter-professional team
  • Status appointment in the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy or Department of Physiotherapy at University of Toronto is an asset
