About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, the Advanced Care Paramedic is assigned tasks or assignments by the Team Leader/Charge Nurse and works in collaboration with other interdisciplinary team members to meet patient care needs. They support patient care by practicing within the Advanced Care Paramedic scope of practice and demonstrated competencies in provision of care.

The Advanced Care Paramedic accepts responsibility for maintaining and continually enhancing competencies through on-going professional development, including participation in education programs, research and continuous quality activities. The Advanced Care Paramedic's practice and conduct is defined by the professional registration body Emergency Health Services Nova Scotia (EHSNS), and they are responsible for ensuring that their registration is current and valid.

The Emergency Department Paramedic is responsible for a wide range of duties within the emergency department and the key to this position is flexibility. This role will include many of the core competency tasks of an Advanced Care Paramedic; however, be prepared to take on new roles with appropriate training and within scope of practice. Examples of scope of practice roles include, but are not limited to: medication administration, IV therapy, phlebotomy, arterial blood gases, application and removal of casts, splinting, procedural sedation, patient assessment, trauma team member, intubations - airway management and teaching.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Successful completion of a recognized Advanced Care Paramedic training program
  • Must be registered and hold licensure with the College of Paramedics Nova Scotia
  • Meets EHSNS re-registration requirements yearly
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience working as an Advanced Care Paramedic
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high-stress, multi-disciplinary environment an asset
  • Previous work experience in a hospital setting or in emergency care preferred
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required
  • Canadian Triage Acuity Scores (CTAS) or willing to obtain
  • NVCI, BTLS, PALS and Cardiac Monitoring or willing to obtain
  • Various other in-services on specific delegated functions and special equipment including defibrillators, IV pumps, rapid volume infusers, PIC lines, Hickman lines, port-a-caths and blood gases, 12 lead EKG interpretation
  • Ability to delegate, problem solve and resolve conflict
  • Demonstrated effective communication, interpersonal, organizational, patient assessment and telecommunications skills
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and supervise patient care
  • Basic computer skills/MEDITECH or willing to learn
  • Possesses physical and mental capabilities to perform the duties of the position
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred.

Hours

  • Permanent full-time position; 75 hours bi-weekly.
  • Shifts include days, nights and weekends.

Compensation and Incentives

$30.45 - $35.33 Hourly
