These are auxiliary opportunities in various locations, which may include (but are not limited to) the following: West Coast Region (Victoria, Parksville, Black Creek, Port McNeill*); South Coast Region (North Vancouver, Alice Lake, Cultus Lake, Sechelt; Powel River [Qathet]); Thompson Cariboo Region (Kamloops, Bowron Lake Park, Hagensborg*); Kootenay Okanagan Region (Penticton, Vernon, Manning Park, Nelson, Cranbrook); North Coast Skeena Region (Atlin*, Dease Lake*, Smithers*, Terrace, Prince Rupert); Omineca Peace Region ( Fort St John, Fort Nelson*, Prince George, Valemount*, Moberly Lake, Liard River*) the * denotes a bi-weekly isolation allowance add to pay. A unique opportunity to work in BC Parks to protect and maintain park values and provide exceptional visitor experience

BC Parks is looking for qualified individuals to work as seasonal Park Rangers in provincial parks throughout the province. Positions will include frontcountry, backcountry or marine parks. Work terms are typically 32 weeks in length. This competition will create an eligibility list of candidates for seasonal vacancies. Appointments to qualified candidates will be made when vacancies are identified.

As a Park Ranger, you are directly responsible for delivering services that support the public’s use of the park system and protects park values. This includes daily maintenance and cleaning of facilities, regular repair, maintenance and renovation of park facilities, and managing the public’s use of the parks. You monitor and maintain facility assets on a daily basis to ensure the park is in pristine repair for visitors. You may also be involved in monitoring and reporting on assigned recreation, conservation and public engagement activities within a park or group of parks. Representing BC Parks, you act as the field contact for park visitors and contractors by providing information and regulating activities. Dedicated to protecting park visitors and resources, you act as a Peace Officer to enforce compliance with the Park Act and other statues and regulations.

New Park Ranger hires will be required to travel for the purpose of attending mandatory Park Ranger training commencing April 24 to May 5, 2023 at Manning Provincial Park near Hope, BC. Details on this training session will be confirmed in the offer letter for successful candidates.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
To be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Completed related degree or 2-year diploma in an Outdoor Recreation Management or a Natural Resource Management related field (related field may include: Biology, Geology, Geography, Recreational Planning, Outdoor Recreation, Forestry, Fisheries, Anthropology); OR,
  • Secondary school graduation (or equivalent) and 2 years’ related experience (related experience can include: park system (operations), conservation, outdoor recreation, forestry, any earth sciences, recreation planning, public safety /enforcement).


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Mandatory Training & Certification:

  • Current and WorkSafe BC recognized Occupational First Aid Level 1, 2 or 3 Certificate.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent from another Canadian Province; a BC CLass 7L/7N, or other learner's permit are not considered equivalent).
  • Successful completion of Enhanced Security Screening, including fingerprint screening.
  • Completion of BC Parks Law and Its Administration (BCIT PRKS 1010 or 0010 course). This course can be obtained through the BC Institute of Technology (BCIT). Course information can be found at: https://www.bcit.ca/study/courses/prks1010. *Note: if you have already successfully completed the BCIT PRKS 3110/3120 courses, BCIT course 1010 is not required.
  • Maintains a current Firearms Possession and Acquisition License
  • Possesses a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or higher marine certification issued by Transport Canada

In addition the above requirements, preference may be given to those with certification and\or experience in one or more of the following:

  • Chainsaw Certification, ATV Operator Certification, Snowmobile Operator Certification, AST1 or higher avalanche certification, Wildlife/Danger Tree Assessor, S100 Fire Suppression Certification, Small domestic vessel basic safety [aka: MED A-3] or higher boating course, Swiftwater Rescue, Marine Radio Operator certification.
  • Wildlife conflict management, marine travel, multi-night backpacking, travel by aircraft, chainsaw use and maintenance, vessel operation and maintenance, vehicle operation and maintenance, firearms use and maintenance, emergency management, facility construction, maintenance and repair.
  • Compliance and enforcement related to statutes and regulations, or development of compliance and enforcement plans to deal with regulatory non-compliance.
  • Previous employment as a Park Ranger with BC Parks within the past 5 years.

Provisos:

Must be willing to wear the BC Parks park ranger uniform and adhere to the applicable policy governing uniform wear, deportment and conduct for designated park rangers.

Will be required to travel within the section and region, including overnight travel, and must be willing and able to undertake outdoor work, including in remote areas and in inclement weather.

Use and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and vessels will be required to access remote locations including 4X4 trucks, ATV\UTVs, snowmobiles, and marine vessels.

Enhanced Security Screening (ESS) will be required.
