Entity and activity description

The main object and purpose of this position consist in testing and maintaining cylinders in a safe manner in order to satisfy customer expectations and improve quality of operations, all while promoting ALC’s quality and safety objectives.

Missions and Responsibilities

1. Assures cylinders testing: Removes valves. Uses fibre optic light to inspect the interior. Fills cylinders with water. Weights cylinders, checks expansion charts. Attaches hydrostatic test head to the cylinder. Operates hoist to position the cylinder into the test jacket, enters data into the control console and tests cylinder. Marks test date and moves cylinders to designated areas.

2. Ensures cylinders maintenance: Operates steamer to dry cylinders and removes old labels. Install valves. Replaces defective safeties, stems, packing nuts and handles on cylinder valves. Prepares cylinders for shot blasting by scraping of decals. Inspects cylinders that have been shot blasted and segregates damaged cylinders for repair or scrap. Paints cylinders and applies decals and markings. Cleans and maintains spray gun and equipment in good working order. Maintains a clean work area as well as any other area which may be assigned.

3. Quality / Safety: Understands and implements required procedures (Standard Operating Instructions) as established in the relevant Quality Manual. Verifies equipment for accuracy with calibrated cylinder and pressure gauge daily. Actively promotes ALC safety and quality objectives. Knows and respects all procedures as indicated in the ALC Quality Manual. Make sure the appropriate corrective and preventive measures are in place in order to answer customer complaints.

4. Prepares reports: Finds information in the technical reference manual and prepares production reports on the number of cylinders painted, the number of valves repaired, the number of cylinders stained and cleaned and the number of defects. Provides this information to the Plant Manager.

5. Process improvement: Works with his/her team as well as with cross-functional teams to continuously improve the work process. Continuously analyses the functioning of the activity, identifies causes of dysfunction and proposes corrective measures accordingly.

Competencies and Profile

  • Diploma: High School Diploma
  • Forklift training
  • 2 years of cylinder sorting and/or cylinder filling experience is an asset
