Poultry Operations Manager Trainee

Role

We are seeking manager trainees with a keen interest in farming and animal wellbeing to assist in managing our layer and pullet farms in Ontario, Manitoba, or Quebec. Upon completion of this 2-year management training program, you will understand how our farms operate and be ready to transition into a poultry management role at Burnbrae Farms.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

In the poultry department, we work as a team so everyone can reach their full potential. We raise birds from day old to the end of their laying period, always with the utmost concern for their health and wellbeing. As a management trainee, you will learn how to run a pullet and layer farm from the ground up through a hands-on, practical approach. You will develop both farming and leadership skills to be a successful farm manager.

Some of the farming skills you will learn include how to:

· Provide hens with excellent care. This includes following prescribed feeding and lighting programs, ensuring clean water and fresh air are provided, handling birds properly, and ensuring the premises are clean

· Safely use farm equipment and troubleshoot maintenance requirements

· Maintain the farm exterior, barn, and equipment

· Implement our farm protocols and programs (workplace safety, security, animal welfare, food safety, on-farm biosecurity) and conduct appropriate employee training

· Maintain and improve existing farm practices to meet and exceed internal and external audit standards

· Help identify potential flock issues and act in a preventative manner using observation and farm data. Work with the farm manager towards continuous improvement

· Begin to track costs and learn about the financial management of the farm

Some of the leadership skills you will learn include how to:

· Provide clear direction, coaching, and guidance

· Lead a team of people with diverse backgrounds

· Prioritize farm tasks, organize workflows, and schedules

Management trainees work full-time, 5 days a week. They are included in the rotating weekend schedule as well as the on-call after-hour schedule to oversee urgent farm activities.

Environment:

  • Physical activity in a farm environment, such as pushing and pulling, crouching, bending, reaching, as well as some climbing and working at heights
  • Barn environments that can be noisy, odorous, hot, humid, and dusty
  • Occasional repetitive lifting of objects of 10-25 pounds

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Demonstrates a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn new skills
  • Interest in leading a team of farm employees, including providing direction and motivation
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • Demonstrates observation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Comfortable interpreting and analyzing data
  • Proficient communication skills - written and oral
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and work situations
  • Able to perform physical tasks that require strength, coordination, and dexterity. Must be able to lift 10-25 lbs repetitively
  • Comfortable around farm animals. Strong interest in farming and animal wellbeing
  • MS Office literacy
  • Valid drivers license
  • English essential. Bilingualism is an asset at our Quebec farms
  • Mechanical aptitude is an asset

Work Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, college degree in a technical field, or equivalent experience
  • Previous work experience (can include part time or summer employment during high school and post secondary)
  • Previous experience on a farm or with animals is an asset

Job Locations Available:

Successful candidates to this position must be willing to relocate to within a 30-minute drive from one of our farms.
