Summary: Under the direction of the Team Lead, the Process Operator (Utility Operator) is responsible for the operation of various equipment to treat Fine Fluid Tailings (FFT) with the goal of recycling the water to use in operations.

This is a dynamic position with various areas in the process in which the incumbent will be assigned to. This is a safety-sensitive position that requires completion of pre-employment/pre-access testing, and completion of the client’s job standards.

Key Focuses:
  • Maintain department housekeeping standards
  • Responsible for completing all client required WebCAT training modules, and recertify at regular intervals.
  • Electronic shift log entry and Passovers with oncoming/ off going shifts
  • Participate in Safety Program (LPS)
  • Maintain production levels through the shift as consistently as possible. Perform operating round checks, including the use of the Intelatrac system
  • Employ control of hazardous energy practices and isolate equipment for maintenance when needed
  • Freeze the scene of any potential incident or near misses as required. Intervene on any unsafe act in a positive manner to ensure the safety of all staff onsite
  • Intervene on any safe act in a positive way to ensure the safety of all people on site
  • Perform the required hazard assessments at the required intervals (LPSA/FLRA)
  • Take corrective action to mitigate immediate hazards, where safe to do
  • Operation of light vehicles in a mining environment will be required.
  • The Job will include performing walk around and pre-trips on equipment fueling light plant , generator pumps and other small equipment.
  • OSBL (outside Battery Limits) Area
  • Operate process piping and valving into FFT & FFT Plant.
  • Operate recycled cold water barge pumps and piping to supply the water as needed to the FFT Plant
  • Monitors piping and drainage containment area for FFT.
  • Operates heating and ventilation systems.
  • Operates the polymer injection system into the FFT.
  • Operates gypsum system to convert dry material to a wet slurry for injection into fine tails.
  • Operates vibrating screens and pumps for screening large material out of the fine tails.
  • Operates utility, instrument air system, pumps and piping for the holding pond.
  • Operates heating and ventilation systems.
  • Batching and Screening (B&S Operation) Area
  • Operates the centrifuge, pumps, and piping to separate and process mixture of polymer, gypsum, and FFT to create FFT cake.
  • Operates conveyor system to transport the FFT cake to the primary conveyor belt.
  • Operates heating and ventilation systems.
  • Operates the main conveyor belt which delivers FFT cake to the loading bin.
  • Operates the hydraulic stem for the TLB area.
  • Operates the glycol heating system, dumping control system for the loading bin.
  • Operates heating and ventilation systems in Truck Loading Bin Area
  • Centrifuge
  • Operates the centrifuge, pumps, and piping to separate and process mixture of polymer, gypsum, and
  • FFT to create FFT cake.
  • Operates conveyor system to transport the FFT cake to the primary conveyor belt.
  • Operates heating and ventilation systems.
  • Performs or assists with maintenance as per the client’s requirements.
  • Truck Loading Bin (TLB) Area
  • Operates the main conveyor belt which delivers FFT cake to the loading bin.
  • Operates the hydraulic system for the TLB area.
  • Operates the glycol heating system, dumping control system for the loading bin.
  • Operates heating and ventilation systems.
  • Performs or assists with maintenance as per the client’s requirements.
  • Panel Operator
  • Operates and monitors all operating systems for the FFT plant from a central location.
  • Ensure all operating parameters and directives are adhered to as per the client’s process and procedures.
  • Performs or assists with maintenance as per the client’s requirements.
  • Must be mechanically inclined and able to work out doors in extreme cold weather temperature for extended period of time , physically fit as job require repetitive climbing, lifting , dragging hoses.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • Candidates with a Power Engineer Level 4 Process Operator/ Millwright ticket experience is required.
  • Retention of a valid class five (5) driver’s license and clean drivers abstract is required - please submit abstract when applying
  • Minimum one(1) to two (2) years of experience is required
  • Must be familiar with Syncrude Base Site
  • Process experience in gypsum, polymer mixing, centrifuge operation, or slurry pump are an asset.
  • Oil and Gas industry experience required
  • Valid CSO certification (or combination of CSTS and OSSA or BSO) is required
  • Ability to speak, write and read English is required
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including good oral, written communication, and listening skills
  • LPS training is considered an asset
  • Process experience in gypsum, polymer mixing, centrifuge operation, or slurry pump applications are an asset.
  • Candidates must understand Directive 85 by the Alberta Energy Regulator, as well as the impact of fine-fluid tailings (FFT) and mature-fluid tailings (MFT)
  • Candidates with Confined Space Training or Permitting experience are an asset.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Boat license required
  • 6 on, 6 off shift (days and nights)
This is a full time permanent position located North of Fort McMurray, AB
