Wii Chiiwaakanak means "partners" in Anishinabemowin and is an outreach initiative through The University of Winnipeg that provides educational, learning and capacity building opportunities in Winnipeg’s inner city.

The program assistant will help with providing community supports through the Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre. They will be the first point of contact for providing assistance to community members accessing the learning commons while also supporting educational, learning and cultural community programming.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the RBC Community Learning Commons – Wii Chiiwaakanak’s Computer Lab. This includes assisting community members/patrons with writing resumes, job applications and job searches.
  • Answer phones, directs calls and records messages.
  • Answers in person inquires about the Centre and available programming.
  • Keeps the community board updated with information about housing, employment, student opportunities, food supports, etc.
  • Assists with general office duties including organizing and maintaining files and supplies.
  • Maintain statistics about computer lab use.
  • Assist with programming: social media promotion, updating website, organizing and acquiring food and program materials, set up and clean up for events.
  • Maintains statistics regarding program use – including the 5+ STEAM programs and the 5+ cultural and language programs.
  • Maintains electronic finance records, assist with financial transactions such as visa reconciliations
  • Assist with programming as needed, i.e. workshop and classroom support.
  • Assists in the planning, organizing and participation of various social and cultural events with the Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre and the Indigenous Engagement department such as, Spring Feast, Graduation Powwow, etc.
  • Reports any difficulties or problems to the Program Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • High school completion or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years office administration training or experience.
  • Experience working with the Indigenous and inner-city communities is considered an asset.
  • Experience compiling statistics and experience with managing financial records is an asset.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge. Must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work and communicate in a cross-cultural work environment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and written.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and the public.
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle is considered an asset.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.


Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and Saturdays.
