The South Slave Divisional Education Council (SSDEC) is the governing education body for the South Slave Division as legislated under the Education Act. Established as a corporation at arm’s length from the Territorial Government, the SSDEC consists of one member selected from each of the five locally elected District Education Authorities (DEAs) that represent the communities of Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, Hay River, Lutsel K’e and K'atlodeeche. The SSDEC serves approximately 1300 students in eight schools, is responsible for a staff of approximately 185 administrators, teachers and support staff and a budget of over 25 million. The Superintendent and staff of the SSDEC provide professional advice; educational, administrative, technical, and financial services; monitoring and support and assistance to the SSDEC, community-based DEAs and their secretary treasurers, school administrators and staff, stakeholders, members of the public, and particularly, students and their families in order to ensure the delivery of quality educational programs and services within the division.

Job Information

In this role, you will be responsible for providing administrative, financial and communications support to the District Education Authority (DEA), the elected governing body that provides guidance and leadership to the schools located in the community. This support will include providing information to DEA members, supporting the preparation of annual budget documents, maintaining financial records, coordinating, and delivering orientation and procedural training to new Board members, liaising with school administrative staff, parents, and stakeholders, assisting with relevant policy implementation, and providing general administrative support within the office.

You will also be responsible for monitoring and reporting on relevant office expenditures and for supervising up to five casual or term staff, depending on the programs being offered by the DEA. Finally, you will monitor the delivery of several programs delivered directly by the DEA, including Transportation, Food Services, Early Childhood, Daycare and Library Services.

The following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are essential for this role:

  • Knowledge of board operations, roles, and responsibilities,
  • Working knowledge of budgeting financial operations- ability to read, understand and prepare financial reports, maintain general ledger and accounts, process financial transactions including accounts receivable and accounts payable,
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP),
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with people who have varying literacy levels,
  • Knowledge and sensitivity to local political and cultural environment,
  • Strong computer skills with computerized financial and accounting programs, database programs, work processing program, spreadheads and email systems,
  • Ability to always maintain confidentiality,

Typically, the above qualification would be attained by:

The completion of accounting and/ or bookkeeping coursework combined with 5 years of related administrative and board operations experience. Equivalencies will be considered.
