Trans Mountain operates Canada’s only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast. We deliver approximately 300,000 barrels of petroleum products each day through 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta and British Columbia, and 111 kilometres of pipeline in Washington state.

Reporting to the Team Lead Right of Way Hazards, as the Senior Engineer Geotechnical, you will have the opportunity to work with a progressive and fast-paced group of engineering professionals. This position is based in our Calgary office.


The Senior Engineer, Geotechnical will provide geotechnical subject matter expertise in the continual development and execution of the Trans Mountain Right of Way Hazards program, which includes both geohazard and third-party hazard management.


Key responsibilities:

  • Provide technical guidance/oversight related to the monitoring and assessment of geotechnical hazards to the pipeline and Right of Way, including recommendations for risk prioritization.
  • Advance the geotechnical hazard detection and monitoring methods by pursuing the use of new data-gathering techniques, analytics, and technologies. Develop and apply pipe-soil interaction and pipe strain demand and reserve capacity principles to aid with geotechnical hazard risk prioritization recommendations.
  • Provide technical guidance/oversight related to the evaluation and approval of third-party crossing or proximity permits to support the Damage Prevention team.
  • Oversee major geotechnical field activities including hazard assessment/monitoring and remediation implementation, including working with projects led by the Pipeline Maintenance and Engineering teams.
  • Manage 3rd party consultants and vendors.
  • Participate in internal audits and external audits with regulatory agencies.
  • Provide technical and other career mentoring to junior and intermediate team members.

Qualifications and Professional Experience:

  • Must have a Professional Engineer designation and eligible for registration as a P Eng. with APEGA and/or APEGBC
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a geotechnical role
  • Preference will be given to candidates that have knowledge and experience in the following areas: pipelines; other linear infrastructure; geohazard monitoring and assessment; seismic geotechnical hazards; project management; mentoring; collaborating with regulatory agencies (CER, AER, BCOGC, PHMSA, AEP); CSA Z662 & CFR 195.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex problems and make sound decisions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a high-paced, multi-task environment with attention to detail.
  • The preferred location for this position is Calgary but we will consider other locations along the pipeline (Edmonton, Kamloops or Burnaby).
