Heartland Generation is one of Alberta’s largest power generators, supplying more than 2,660 MW (gross) of power for the benefit of industrial, commercial and residential consumers.

Our balancd portfolio of contracted and merchant facilities provides reliable and eficient baseload power, as well as dispatchable generation with the ability to meet peak electricity demand. At Heartland Generation, we are focused on building a better bridge to a clean energy future through our innovative decarbonization strategy. As the first large-scale power generator in Alberta to transition completely off coal and one of the largest cogeneration operators in the province, we are now driving toward further industry decarbonization and our goal of net zero by 2050.

We are actively pursuing new technologies, including the integration of carbon capture and sequestration, hydrogen production and hydrogen-fueled power generation and renewable opportunities. By utilizing our existing assets, we will further reduce emissions, generate clean, reliable electricity and continue our investment in the communities where we live and work.

How do you fit in?

The Short Term Optimizer will be an integral part of Heartland’s front office team in evaluating market fundamentals, indentifying intraday import and export opportunities, and daily reporting. This role is ideal for those who thrive in a hands-on, fast paced, growing environment, enjoy wearing multiple hats, and have a passion for identifying trends in the power market. The successful candidate enjoys value creation, forecasting, optimization, process improvements and efficiencies.

What you’ll be doing:

• Analyze recent market fundamentals for trends and positioning the Heartland portfolio accordingly to maximize profitability Execution of strategic and tactical asset pricing, import/export and financial trading decisions
• Help improve import and export tools used daily
• Develop and carry out daily reporting for intraday imports and exports
• Create a day-ahead price forecast for Alberta Create daily summary of intertie transactions for the front office team
• Report and improve intraday gas forecasting to help maximize utilization and optimization
• Work closely with the ancillary services, forward trading and gas teams and provide coverage as required
• Weekly meetings with supervisor on suggestions and areas of concern
• Provide expert quantitative and fundamental analysis of Alberta and adjacent power markets, transmission infrastructure, spreads, weather, and all other factors that influence Alberta and adjacent market power prices
• Develop and carry out daily reporting for intraday offer strategy changes (VPR’s)
• Provide weekly or monthly summaries of competitor outages and offer behaviour

What you must have:

• 5+ years of relevant previous experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Economics, Engineering or related discipline
• Demonstrated ability to focus on detail and follow established procedures
• Demonstrated organizational skills that enable effective decision making to meet tight deadlines in stressful situations
• Ability to lead and solve complex problems with confidence Knowledge of WECC power markets would be an asset
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively present analysis and/or reports to large audiences at all levels of the organization
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint

Where you’ll be working:

This position is located in our Head Office in Calgary, Alberta.

Currently, this position is eligible for our Hybrid Work Arrangement schedule whereby some remote work from home days is optional.
