How do you fit in?

The Short Term Optimizer will be an integral part of Heartland’s front office team in evaluating market fundamentals, indentifying intraday import and export opportunities, and daily reporting. This role is ideal for those who thrive in a hands-on, fast paced, growing environment, enjoy wearing multiple hats, and have a passion for identifying trends in the power market. The successful candidate enjoys value creation, forecasting, optimization, process improvements and efficiencies.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Analyze recent market fundamentals for trends and positioning the Heartland portfolio accordingly to maximize profitability Execution of strategic and tactical asset pricing, import/export and financial trading decisions
  • Help improve import and export tools used daily
  • Develop and carry out daily reporting for intraday imports and exports
  • Create a day-ahead price forecast for Alberta Create daily summary of intertie transactions for the front office team
  • Report and improve intraday gas forecasting to help maximize utilization and optimization
  • Work closely with the ancillary services, forward trading and gas teams and provide coverage as required
  • Weekly meetings with supervisor on suggestions and areas of concern
  • Provide expert quantitative and fundamental analysis of Alberta and adjacent power markets, transmission infrastructure, spreads, weather, and all other factors that influence Alberta and adjacent market power prices
  • Develop and carry out daily reporting for intraday offer strategy changes (VPR’s)
  • Provide weekly or monthly summaries of competitor outages and offer behaviour

What you must have:

  • 5+ years of relevant previous experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Economics, Engineering or related discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to focus on detail and follow established procedures
  • Demonstrated organizational skills that enable effective decision making to meet tight deadlines in stressful situations
  • Ability to lead and solve complex problems with confidence Knowledge of WECC power markets would be an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively present analysis and/or reports to large audiences at all levels of the organization
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint

Where you’ll be working:

This position is located in our Head Office in Calgary, Alberta.

Currently, this position is eligible for our Hybrid Work Arrangement schedule whereby some remote work from home days is optional.
