Department summary

The Tuberculosis Program Evaluation and Research Unit (TB PE & RU) in the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry was established in 1998 from generous support from Alberta Health and the University of Alberta. The TB PE & RU performs strategic planning and research towards TB elimination and evaluation of programs in Canada. We have maintained funding since the beginning and continue to adapt and evolve in the pursuit of TB elimination. The TB PE & RU conducts programming and data analysis support to public health and health care organizations at the national, provincial, regional, and local levels. We aim to create, effective stakeholder liaisons and create a “TB think tank” where academic research is bridged to health care providers in the field.

Position summary

The Research Study Coordinator will work under the direction of Dr Richard Long, Principal Investigator of the CIHR funded research project entitled, “Implementing the TB patients’ charter of care in high incidence communities and across jurisdictional borders”. The Coordinator will collaborate with other members of the research team and will have primary responsibility for ensuring the completion of each of the study objectives within the study timelines. This will require a good understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, and strong written skills necessary to document the process and outcomes. As the study spans the prairie region engaging a number of different participants and organizations, the Coordinator will require excellent organization, management and interpersonal skills. The study Coordinator will also be responsible for hiring and managing part time study staff.

Duties

• Responsible for the overall management of the study project including the initiation and execution of the project during its life span
• Monitor, assess and manage the project status on an ongoing basis to ensure project objectives are met in a timely, cost-efficient manner
• Assess and communicate project resource requirements, proactively anticipate project issues and develop strategies for resolution on an ongoing basis to ensure successful project completion
• Direct and train support personnel assigned to project teams. Review materials and communications prepared by project team members and provide appropriate feedback when necessary
• Contribute to the ongoing review and modification of protocols to ensure continuing relevancy
• Supervise data management processes to ensure adherence to established policies and project-specific standard operating procedures

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Public Health, Human Ecology, etc.; graduate preferred
• Graduate level training in Public Health, Nursing or a related field
• 1-2 years of related experience, preferably in an academic/clinical research environment in which both quantitative and qualitative research methods were utilized by the incumbent.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple sites and provide leadership to a multi-site team
• Exceptional communicator with the ability to influence a broad and diverse range of stakeholders through effective relationships
• Experience with developing knowledge transfer activities and project management
• Experience with ethics submissions, manuscript editing, and annual reports or related academic writing
• Experience with mentoring and training junior team members and/ or students
• Strong skills and experience in quantitative data analysis (i.e. SPSS, SAS, or Stata); knowledge of R and/or Python
• Excellent organizational and critical thinking skills.
• Excellent spelling, grammar, editing, and proofreading skills

Preferred Qualification

• Specific and intensive experience working with tuberculosis and/or Indigenous communities would be a definite asset, particularly gleaned from past collaboration with staff or students of the Tuberculosis Program Evaluation and Research Unit.
