JOB DESCRIPTION:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

The Shelter Worker provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.

The New Hope Centre services provide support to individuals transitioning and reintegrating from Correctional
Institutions to community, as well as individuals experiencing homelessness/poverty, and those at risk of homelessness
/ poverty, and individuals struggling with addiction & mental health challenges.

This position reports to the Program Manager. This position is part time and based out of our Nanaimo facility. This is not a remote position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
  • Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports
  • Liaises external agencies as needed (e.g. police, urgent situations)
  • Coordinates client care relating to security issues; may be directly involved doing bed checks, room/personal searches
  • May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients’ understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline
  • May handle finances relating to room rentals and meal tickets, and receipting of same
  • May serve as receptionist for Shelter
  • May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of high school
  • More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including, experience with frontline work in a social service setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current social issues related to homelessness, mental illness and drug addiction is essential.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires the applicant to stand for various periods of time, walk multiple flights of stairs and occasionally lift objects no exceeding 30 lbs.

CONCENTRATION REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires continuously monitoring the environment, monitoring security cameras and attentiveness when interacting with clients and recording information.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a shelter and/or in treatment facilities.

The incumbent may have little to no travel required.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent.
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening.
  • Federal Government “Enhanced Reliability” Security clearance.
  • A clean drivers abstract.
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.

HOURS: 16 hours per week

Schedule: Saturday & Sunday – 11:00pm to 7:00am
