The Footprint Toronto and Vancouver office is currently looking for a well-rounded Sustainability Specialist in their early stage of their career with a passion for sustainable, healthy, low-carbon, resilient buildings and spaces. You will support our senior sustainability team members to affect the design and construction of some of Canada’s highest performing buildings and work with our team to dramatically impact environmental sustainability and community wellbeing. You will also conduct analysis to support the integrated design process and certification under leading industry programs such as LEED and WELL as well as support our team in growing areas such as climate resilience, life-cycle analysis, and greenhouse gas inventories.

  • Be an active participant in a small but dynamic and ambitious team that delivers sustainability projects across Canada.
  • Support our senior consultants to manage a portfolio of sustainability consulting projects across Canada.
  • Be an active participant in the integrated design process and assist our clients and design teams to set ambitious goals for sustainability, wellbeing, climate resiliency and green building certifications.
  • Work with our senior team members to advise clients, design teams, and team members on project-specific sustainability strategies that will contribute to their successful pursuit of goals.
  • Develop strategies to reduce embodied carbon through materials specifications, product substitutions, and iterative Life Cycle Assessments (LCA).
  • Coordinate the certification of our projects with programs such as LEED, Zero Carbon Building Standard, WELL, and Fitwel, working closely with our senior team members.
  • Provide project management support, tracking, and communication related to sustainability objectives on our projects, including supporting the creation of presentations, reports, interactive workshops, and sustainability planning documents/frameworks.
  • Build and grow your level of knowledge of industry developments and trends related to sustainability.
  • Take advantage of our rich, multi-disciplinary environment to build your skills and expertise through new challenges and educational opportunities.
A few more qualifications which will help you with these responsibilities:
  • One to three years of industry experience in architecture, engineering, real estate, or construction, with a focus on project management in sustainability.
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in architecture, engineering, building science, architectural/engineering technology, sustainability, or environmental science.
  • LEED Accredited Professional designation or commitment to achieving it within 6 months of employment.
  • Passionate about sustainability and understand the foundational concepts of sustainable buildings including energy performance, material selection, and the integrated design process.
  • Keen interest in building your knowledge base, technical skills, and ability to be proactive in pushing to higher levels of performance.
  • Strong work ethic, professional attitude and organizational skills with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks on multiple projects.
  • A self-starter and can work well independently but also enjoys working in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Additional Nice to Haves:
  • Pursuing registration either as a Professional Engineer, Certified Technologist or Registered Architect is an asset.
  • Relevant industry accreditations are a plus: LEED AP with specialty, WELL AP, FitWel Ambassador etc.
  • Experience conducting Life Cycle Assessments using Tally, One Click LCA, or Athena; or you are dedicated to building this capacity is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated industry presence through thought leadership including publications, presentations, volunteer roles etc.
