As a Canadian Business Immigration Articling Student, you will support our clients by providing comprehensive immigration support. EY Law LLP helps organizations as well as their employees and family members to relocate, maintain and adjust their status within Canada. The firm’s comprehensive range of Canadian business immigration services include advising on immigration strategies, preparation of work permits, consular processes, permanent residence and citizenship applications. Our focus is going beyond compliance and ensuring an enhanced experience for our corporate and individual clients. Key responsibilities


As an Articling Student, you will join our Canadian Business Immigration team. You will support complex and challenging Canadian business immigration engagements and contribute to the delivery of solutions and mobility program management for our diverse institutional clients. We work in a high volume, fast-paced environment which promotes accelerated learning opportunities.


Accountabilities

  • Ability to gain knowledge related to Canadian business immigration categories and procedures
  • On instruction from the engagement manager, research current processing requirements and timeline at service centres/consulates etc.
  • Manage the lifecycle of immigration applications including, case management, document collection, drafting, reviewing, editing and submission of packages.
  • Collect information and documentation from HR contacts and applicants leveraging established protocols and case management technology.
  • Liaising with immigration authorities and agencies.
  • Using available resources, advocate on behalf of clients with immigration authorities and draft complete application packages for review by the supervising lawyer and engagement mangers on the team.
  • Ensure that applications are filed in a timely manner.
  • Meet with lawyers to discuss questions raised by the client and then relate information back to the HR contact/applicant.
  • Draft emails in response to queries by clients and notify them of updates to their applications.
  • Delegate appropriate work to support staff, such as: completion of forms, copying of documents, and mailing out application packages.
  • Follow up with immigration authorities on pending applications.
  • Conduct electronic data entry including billing and general client information in applicant tracking system.
  • Ensure that lawyers are at all times advised of client related issues.
  • Professional Development: may be required to attend seminars and professional development courses that are relevant to their area of specialty.
  • Monitoring engagement economic metrics including timely billing and collections.
  • Drafting immigration Alerts and news flashes related to recent developments in a professional and timely manner.


Qualifications

  • Registered or eligibility to register as a student-at-law status with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Completion or eligibility to enrol in the Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP).
  • Completion of a J.D. or LLB degree.
  • Demonstrated interest in Canadian immigration law. Prior exposure is an asset.
  • Superior academic credentials - please include your transcripts in the application.
  • Excellent organizational, and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Adaptable to new technology and automated processes.
  • Strong attention to detail.
