Where does the Tooling Engineer fit in?

The Tooling Engineer will be involved in tooling/injection mould maintenance, mould repairs as well as making new moulds (as required). Ensuring efficient manufacturing, effective tool build to timeline objectives and project requirements review and be part of the team approving tooling designs and requirements of projects. The Tooling Engineer will support internal teams such as Sales and Product Realization in reviewing and developing technical presentations as well as being present on technical sales meetings with the client.

The Tooling Engineer will be responsible for managing the completion of requisitions for capital, tooling and any other required materials for assigned projects. Work closely with Chief Engineer, Program Managers, Plant Manager and suppliers in order to meet project goals and deadlines, following up on all aspects of a given project from start to finish. The Tooling Engineer will keep updated on all Axiom’s tool and process developments and support/guide program managers as needed.

  • Tooling Engineer Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for oversight of all tooling maintenance and participate in design reviews- reviewing and approving of all tooling design requirements within projects.
  • Developing and reviewing tooling and technical presentations to assist the Axiom Sales team
  • Attending and supporting at technical sales meeting with clients
  • Oversight of all tooling development, automation, process development and optimization, providing support and guidance as required to the tooling and equipment maintenance.
  • Tool Management Responsibilities:
  • Participate as required in DFM for new tools
  • Responsible to ensure quality, reliability, maintainability and durability of tooling which meets or exceeds both internal and external customer requirements as directed
  • Manage all project expectations and deliverables for a specific tooling project
  • Ensure all team members understand the project scope / approach and requirements
  • Ensure efficient manufacturing , tooling approach and effective tool build to timeline objectives and project requirements
  • Review mould designs and performs appropriate DFM (Design for Manufacturability) assessments and feedback to the team as required
  • Schedule all tasks for tool build as required
  • Perform preventive maintenance / work orders as required
  • Perform repairs / tooling assessments as required
  • Complete work order and inspection records & maintain records as per company policy
  • Maintain compliance with the quality assurance manual
  • Perform mould maintenance activity
  • Review the Non-conformance Report and assists quality committee to implement corrective and preventive actions
  • Keep work area and equipment clean and orderly and/or follows all safety rules
  • Follow inspection methods and work instructions, and company policies and procedures as required
  • Review mould flow analysis for tool optimization
  • Provide technical leadership on the plant floor in regards to tooling, maintenance and process optimization.
  • Support Chief Engineer to ensures the strategy (customer requirements / timeline / milestones) is well communicated with stakeholders for alignment and meeting objectives
  • Monitors and manages all key tooling dates and timing charts as required
  • Facilitate tooling/process status meetings with project teams & account steering teams
  • Identify roadblocks and recommend appropriate resolutions
  • Manages information both externally (customer) and internally (Axiom Plastics) as required by each project
  • Responsible for timely communication of information and customer interaction
  • Ensures successful tooling program launch – on time & on budget
  • Ensure to keep Chief Engineer and Management updated on program status and communicate escalations as required
  • Support tooling and process transfer to / from other facilities.
  • Ensures compliance of IATF-16949 systems and procedures

Are you our next Tooling Engineer ?

  • Post-secondary education in Engineering or related field
  • Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in injection moulding tool manufacturing (within the automotive industry)
  • Impeccable oral and written communication & presentation skills, with the ability to interface with senior management
  • Strong relationship building skills (internal & external stakeholders)
  • Customer advocate- able to effectively communicate client needs to the organization simultaneously balancing organizational requirements
  • Proactive view to identifying & driving financial benefits for our clients
  • Proven successful launches of previous programs (on time & on budget)
  • Ability to think & execute strategically and is results oriented
  • Self-motivated individual with a strong attention to detail
  • Develop long-term strategies for key accounts that align with corporate mandate
  • Proficient with MS Project, Autodesk and mould flow analysis and robot programing
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi task as required
