Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM – flexibility required to meet the needs of clients. Some evening and weekend work may be required.

Position Description

Participating as a member of the team and under the direction of the Program Manager, the Transitional Housing Support Worker is responsible for assisting women and children with their transition from the shelter to the community and sometimes, from the community into shelter. She is responsible for providing risk assessments, safety planning, transitional planning, crisis counselling, support and referrals and family court support to residents and ex-residents of Nelson House and to clients from the community. She contributes to ensuring services are safe and confidential.

Basic duties include:

  • Crisis intervention with women and children including answering the crisis line, cell phone and counselling line.
  • Provision of information, resources & referrals.
  • Advocating for women and liaising with community agencies.
  • Maintaining records and documents related to service provision.
  • Participating in updating and maintaining house maintenance and security.
  • Providing program statistics to the Executive Director.
  • Providing back-up and replacement for front line staff at Nelson House.
  • Accompanying women to legal and other appointments as needed.
  • Safety planning on an ongoing basis and as needed.
  • Participating on external committees.
  • Attend bi-weekly and all staff meetings and staff trainings regularly.

Qualifications:

  • BSW, BA or equivalent with a minimum of two years relevant work experience or

Social Service Diploma with a minimum of four years relevant work experience.

  • Crisis intervention experience.
  • High level of risk assessment and safety planning experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with other agencies.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working within a feminist framework and providing services for women and children survivors of violence.
  • Abilities, skills or knowledge in working with clients in languages other than English and with cultural diversities.
  • Knowledge of family, criminal and immigration law.
  • Extensive knowledge of community resources.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Second language ability is an asset.
  • Must have access to a vehicle and a valid drivers’ license.

Note: this position will not be based on seniority but on merit and meeting necessary qualifications
