SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Reports to the Greenhouse Supervisor, the Tropical Greenhouse Gardener is responsible for the daily care of all plants within the Tropical Greenhouse and surrounding outdoor landscape. Requires a strong understanding of horticulture, tropical plant maintenance within a conservatory environment and cultivation of a variety of tropical and sub-tropical plant material.

GENERAL DUTIES

Plan and changes seasonal floral and plant displays as required; provides daily maintenance of displays.

Maintains Tropical Greenhouse plant material and displays for the public/visitors. Answers general questions related to the Tropical Greenhouse and Horticulture programs.

Assists in the conceptual development and installation as required of all spaces within the Tropical and Production Greenhouse related to designs and events.

Administers maintenance programs including: irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease control, pruning, cleaning, planting, weeding, mulching and seasonal rotations.

Propagate tropical plants for renewal or enhancement.

Maintains accurate system of records, including biological and fertilizer applications, tropical plant material evaluations, bird, turtle and fish feeding.

Identify & monitors insects and disease; assists in recommending environmental and biological controls. Maintains good greenhouse sanitation.

Assists with planning and placement of floral displays including seasonal display changes and floral shows in both the Tropical Greenhouse and Production Greenhouse.

Provides customer service to internal and external customers/staff regarding events and programming.

Uses general knowledge of Priva environmental controls and its functionality.

Weekend work will be required as assigned.

Open and close greenhouse, responsible for keys.

Drive service vehicle as required.

Complete daily time and equipment logs.

Care for fish, free flying birds, and turtles.

Responsible for maintenance of tropical ponds.

Performs general greenhouse duties within the Production Greenhouse.

Work in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.

Performs other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preference given to candidates who have obtained a 2-year Greenhouse Management or Horticulture related diploma.
  • Practical and technical knowledge of greenhouse procedures, methods and strong knowledge of display techniques with an emphasis on tropical plants, exhibition displays, propagation and plant maintenance.
  • Proven greenhouse experience.
  • Valid Greenhouse Exterminator Licence required.
  • Strong interpersonal & communication skills.
  • Ability to deal with the public and staff with tact and courtesy.
  • Ability to carry out a variety of manual labour duties associated with greenhouse work including: bending, kneeling, squatting, prolonged standing, ability to sustain moderate physical exertion with a full-range of body motion, climbing a ladder, lifting to 50lbs.
  • Willingness to work weekends.
  • Must possess a Class ‘G’ Drivers Licence.
  • Must have a working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment utilizing MS Office software, a working knowledge of work order software such as “Hansen” would be an asset.

THIS POSITION REQUIRES A VALID CLASS “G” DRIVER’S LICENCE AND PROOF THEREOF IS REQUIRED AFTER HIRE.

SALARY: Salary Grade G per hour

HOURS: 40 per week
