Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm which includes a 30 minute unpaid meal break.

General Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Supervisor of Maintenance Services or designate, the Vehicle Mechanic is responsible for the repair, maintenance and service of a variety of Board vehicles and associated equipment; ensuring work is performed in a safe and effective manner, complying with Board and legislative standards and codes; ensuring Board vehicles, equipment and tools are properly maintained; performing other related duties to ensure that properties, facilities, and equipment are properly maintained.

Required Qualifications:
Knowledge of, and continual upgrading of, relevant codes and legislation (Acts and Regulations), new materials, equipment, products, methods and procedures.

Interpersonal and communication skills required to liaise with co-workers, car dealers, and Board personnel, listening skills required to understand explanations of problems and how equipment is functioning, etc., initiative and judgement are required to make decisions such as methods of repair and equipment/supplies needed, prioritizing and scheduling work orders; organization skills to prioritize work and reschedule activities due to emergency calls.

Ability to use a variety of tools such as wrenches, sockets, pneumatic tools, drills, grinders, multi-meter, computer diagnostic equipment, acetylene arc and MIG welding equipment.

Ability to report code violations, complete forms such as daily logs and work order sheets, use the work order system, costing materials.

Ability to use electronic mail system and computer maintenance management system and to work with minimum supervision.

This knowledge would normally be obtained through completion of secondary school diploma, and trade certificate with a Class A mechanic’s license for gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel (propane) and a minimum of 5 years experience in the auto mechanics trade, which includes 3 years in industrial or commercial fleet maintenance. Valid Ontario Class D driver's license with a Z endorsement, or equivalent. The incumbent must keep all required licenses current, and take approved training courses as required.
