At Sea Observer Duties:

Designated At Sea Observers will be deployed on a commercial crab fishing vessel for one trip, every 2 months of the open season for the Area A commercial crab season – a total of 4 trips in a year.

The exact date and time will vary – but a trip will be 3-8 days depending on weather and vessel availability. This Observer will be required to collect biological data on the crab and by-catch caught by the crab vessel and record all necessary information on our bio-sampling forms.

At Sea Observers provide accurate, timely, and independent third-party verification for the Commercial Crab industry. The successful candidate will also have an opportunity for more field work in the summer performing dockside validations for salmon demo fisheries that may be open.

All training will be provided in November and the observer will be paid for their time during the training process. The first trip taking place in December or January.

Requirements:

  • Meticulously record details
  • Good with working in all weather conditions

  • Need high school diploma
  • Need to pass criminal records check
  • Not involved in commercial fishing
  • Previous experience is not necessary, but an interest in Fisheries is an asset

Video Analyst Duties and Responsibilities:

Hours: 20 hours per week with opportunities for more hours

Video analysts are responsible for the efficient collection of quality data from video footage of the Area A crab fleet as assigned to them. The video analyst will review video and data collected by Area A crab vessel that record their fishing activity.

Videos will be reviewed using a custom online database which also serves as a data entry tool. Training in use of this software will be provided but general computer literacy and experience in data entry is an asset. You will be responsible for tracking the hours worked and reporting the information every two weeks or as required.

The position will also be used for other administration duties as needed by the program.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience with data entry, and good task management and tracking skills.
  • Working knowledge of Excel and a high comfort level working with video software are assets.
  • At-sea/river experience aboard recreational, commercial and/or food fishing vessels an asset.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Work well under pressure, reliable, very organized and disciplined.
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of self-motivation as well as the ability to take direction from managers and be a team player.
