The incumbent will be responsible for fulfilling the supervision of the Drop-In Centre at Sutton Youth Services. They will be responsible for client supervision, constant communication with Program Services Case Worker staff team, and the coordination / administration of drop-in centre attendance roll. They will also track activities and programming that takes place through the drop-in program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works specifically in coordination with Program Services Case Workers, After Care program team staff, and Volunteer Supports Coordinator; all of whom move through drop-in facilities daily/regularly
  • Works generally in coordination with all staff teams of the Salvation Army Sutton Youth Services, community volunteers and partner agency staff which access our drop-in services
  • Works under supervision of the Manager of, Employment, Education and Specialized Services

Service Responsibilities

  • The incumbent will promote positive and supportive attitudes toward youth who are experiencing homelessness
  • Work alongside community members and residential clients in all facets of drop-in services
  • Help facilitate good relationships between drop-in clients and community member/project staff
  • Help nurture and support a positive environment for all clients and staff

Organizational Responsibilities

  • The incumbent will adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and Sutton Youth Services
  • Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and in service training
  • Engage in weekly supervision sessions with supervisor throughout the summer work season
  • Ensure a working knowledge of, and follow the Policy & Procedures Manual and the Employees Handbook
  • Become familiar with the provision of the position description & operations manual, which will be provided for each job position
  • As required and is applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to management; and represent the Organization in a professional manner

Program Responsibilities

  • Perform supervision and oversight of Drop-In services ‘Youthreach’ room and the facility gymnasium and washrooms as necessary
  • Engage in rapport-building conversations and activities with clients where applicable
  • Supervise computer and materials access of drop-in centre clients
  • Manage regular sign-in/attendance sheets and database
  • Fulfill statistics inputting in program tracking database regularly, as necessary
  • Ensure that Health and Safety standards are met or surpassed in all operations
  • Guest on JHSC summer meetings to ask or share about any Health and Safety questions/concerns
  • Attend regular supervision meetings
  • Perform program statistics as assigned
  • Maintain contact with volunteer support coordinator and personnel, as necessary.
  • Act as an advocate and be a positive role model for residential client participants as well as youth in the community
  • Develop effective working relationships and partnerships with community members, representatives of other departments, agencies and co-workers
  • Maintain documentation and filing and other administration duties as required
  • Represent the Salvation Army and this project at community meetings

Perform any other related duties as requested by supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary full time position (8 weeks) based on 35 hours per week
  • Indoor Drop in Centre/ office

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
    • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment.
    • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
    • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
      • International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident.
  • 18 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment
  • Current College or university student in a related field, such as SSW, CYW, BSW, etc.
  • Current WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training is preferred
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is preferred

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Experience in working with youth in a mentorship capacity is preferential.
  • Knowledge and understanding of, and a commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Be available for full 8 weeks of program
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Excellent organizational, time management, written and oral communication skills
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and individually
  • Ability to work within a Christian perspective
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Participate in all training provided by the Ministry Unit
  • Be caring and non-judgemental of clients-regardless of their level of ability or commitment
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
