PROGRAM

The Ecosystems Branch leads the development of strategic conservation policy, science, and assessments for native species and ecosystems. The Branch is responsible for developing strategic frameworks, standards, policies, legislation/regulation, and guidance for species and ecosystems and setting priorities for conservation and recovery of species and ecosystems that guide the actions of the Natural Resource Sector (NRS). The Branch, in coordination with our partners, provides conservation science leadership, expertise, as well as services for assessing the status of provincial species and ecosystems.

JOB OVERVIEW

The conservation policy analyst conducts policy analysis, research, and develops policies and recommendations for program and/or legislative changes on topics such as biodiversity, ecosystem health, environmental mitigation, species and ecosystems at risk, and wetlands. These positions will also support internal and external engagement, including developing materials, tracking, and analyzing feedback. The day-to-day work of these positions will include independent research and analysis, collaborating with colleagues and external partners, project management, and supervising contracts.

An understanding of current issues and opportunities pertaining to environmental policy is beneficial, but not required.

These positions report to the Unit Head, Conservation Policy and Planning; and to the Unit Head, Biodiversity Objectives and Assessment in the Ecosystems Branch, respectively.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Undergraduate degree or higher in biology, natural resource management, public administration, or equivalent and 2 years of related experience*.
  • Related Experience includes:
  • Experience researching policy issues and conducting policy analysis.
  • Experience managing projects and/or project components.
Preference may be given to candidates with 1 or more of the following:
  • Experience in program development and implementation.
  • Experience working with provincial legislation, policy and/or programs in any of the following areas:
o Forest and Range Practices Act and the Government Action Regulations;
o Wetlands; and/or
o Environmental mitigation and offsetting.
  • Experience with provincial or federal species at risk programs or legislation.
  • Experience coordinating and working with diverse interested parties (e.g., different levels of government, First Nations, environmental non-governmental organizations, industry, academia).
  • Experience advancing principles of reconciliation with Indigenous People in a corporate context.
