We are seeking two seasonal Assistant Fish Culturists for the Grand Rapids Fish Hatchery. The Assistant Fish Culturists will work
through the spring and summer season each year (6-month term) and will assist in the operation and maintenance of the Grand
Rapids Fish Hatchery, assist with spawn collection, feeding fish species, and proper release of fish stocks to Provincial waters.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists with egg collection, incubation, hatching, and rearing of all fish species at the Grand Rapids Fish Hatchery.
  • Uses proper biosecurity procedures to clean fish rearing facilities, incubation units and all production equipment to prevent
infection or spread of disease.
  • Notifies senior hatchery staff of any irregularities with the fish stocks or equipment.
  • Assists with general maintenance and repair of hatchery equipment and hatchery grounds, as directed.
  • Assists with the capture and spawning of brood stock at satellite spawn camps, as required.
  • Assists with the distribution of hatchery reared fish to prescribed stocking sites.
  • Assists with the administration of prescribed treatment of eggs and fish, including inoculations for disease control.
  • Assists with data collection and record keeping.
  • Completes general housekeeping duties within the facility.

The successful applicant will be required to work a modified work cycle (the Hatchery works a schedule that is 8 days on shift
followed by 6 days off shift).

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Grade 10 education or equivalent.
  • Must be willing to be trained on various functions at Manitoba Hydro.
  • Physically able to perform the work (e.g., field work) and willing to work in adverse conditions such as rain, heat, cold and
others.
  • Demonstrated capability of communicating effectively both orally and in writing in a prompt and courteous manner.
  • Capable of working effectively with others inside and outside the Corporation.
  • Possess a sense of responsibility, independence, initiative, and ownership of the activities for which he/she is responsible.
  • Must comply with Manitoba Hydro safety policies and regulations.
  • Must be willing to work in a shift work environment.

Salary Range

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $18.21-$23.76 Hourly.
