Audio Visual (AV) Technician

Summary of Duties:

Reporting to the IT Manager, the Audio-Visual (AV) Technician will perform specialized and technical work encompassing all aspects of the organizations AV systems and services, including providing support. The AV Technician will be responsible for assisting Members and Staff in setting up and supporting AV equipment for various sized presentations, courses, meetings (in-person, hybrid, and virtual), etc. In addition, this position will also assist with the organizations Deskside
Support requests and tasks.

Qualifications:

  • A diploma from a recognized technical institute or post-secondary institution would be an asset or an equivalent combination of experience and industry recognized training/coursework
  • Advanced Certification in AV Control Systems (i.e., Atlona) would be considered an asset
  • Extensive familiarity with various AV products, technologies, integrations, solutions (i.e., AVoIP, multicasting, etc.), and brands (i.e., Atlona)

Experience:

  • Minimum three (3) years of related audio-visual industry experience.

Intermediate level of experience with AV control systems, installations, integrations and providing AV support, is required.

OR

  • Two years general experience plus four years of progressively responsible technical experience in an AV customer service environment.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced computer skills
  • Knowledge of low voltage systems and signal flow for audio, video, and control
  • Knowledge in best practices for systems integration, wiring, termination, and labelling assets
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of AV practices and procedures
  • Videoconferencing experience including operation call set-up and equipment
  • Demonstrated AV Control experience including Altona, Crestron, Extron and/or AMX
  • Proficient in AVoIP systems including Dante enabled devices and Dante

Controller

  • Experience in DSP programming
  • Experience and knowledge of web conferencing tools such Teams, Zoom etc.
  • Excellent problem solving, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of Mac/PC hardware and applications
  • Knowledge of basic networking fundamentals
  • Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and meet short deadlines
  • Ability to independently organize, and accurately complete multiple tasks by establishing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work cohesively in a team environment is essential
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationship with the Membership, the public and other Staff
  • The incumbent must possess a pleasant manner and strong interpersonal skills, and will be required to work with Members or other Staff in stressful situations.

Key Activities:

A. Maintenance, Troubleshooting, Problem Solving and Technical

Support

  • Set up and tear down IT and AV equipment (laptops, projectors, speakers, microphones, videoconference units, teleconference units, etc.) in meeting rooms requested via online meeting booking systems
  • Assist with meetings/functions that require use of AV infrastructure (audio, video, web conferencing, webcasting, visual display or projection, and control system (i.e., Atlona)) operations
  • Troubleshoot last-minute AV problems, as required, as well as non-critical situations, in-person (Headquarters) and remotely (Regional Offices)
  • Operate and test functionality of all AV and integrated conference rooms – locally and remotely for regional offices
  • Perform routine testing and problem diagnosis of projectors, microphones, speakers, amplifiers & LCD/Plasma Displays
  • Perform preventative maintenance to resolve AV related problems, including updating firmware and software
  • Install, maintain, service and support a variety of AV systems, integrations, and equipment, including, but not limited to: o AV control units o Multi-cast devices o Video conference systems o LCD/Plasma displays, cameras, projectors and screens o Video Walls o Speakers and microphones o Digital signage solutions o Media players o Perform cable pulls, solder, crimp and terminate audio, video and network cables

B. Other related duties:

  • Assisting with and completing Deskside Support requests and tasks
  • Assisting the IT team with the implementation of special projects and new processes
  • Ability to travel to AUPE regional offices throughout Alberta, for special support cases and projects, as required
  • Ability to create, assimilate, and convey technical material in a concise and effective manner
  • Experience in equipment research, testing and providing documented proposals for equipment standards and designs
  • Provide training and support to Staff and Members on the proper usage and operation of videoconferencing & AV systems
  • Developing and maintaining AV related documentation including installation, configuration, how-to and online help for Staff and Members
  • Manage multiple assignments simultaneously while working independently with staff from IT and other departments
  • Undertake other related duties as assigned
