The Opportunity

The PEI Public Library Service is seeking a dynamic, innovative, collaborative, hands-on and fun-loving applicants to fill the position of Children and Teen Services Librarian for the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre (CLLC). Reporting to the Regional Librarian the Children and Teen Services Librarian will manage the operations of the Children’s Library and develop, implement and evaluate goals, objectives, programs and services to meet the needs of children and young adults in the Charlottetown area.

The Library

The newly opened CLLC encompasses 40,000 sq ft of the Dominion Building in the heart of Charlottetown, adding a whole new dimension to the already bustling downtown, and providing an engaging community space for all Islanders. With a new library increasing visits, interests and library members, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to make a mark on the community and shape the program offerings for children and teens.

Some highlights of the new library that are waiting for the right person to bring them to their maximum programming potential include:

  • Makerspace with 3D printers, sewing machines, Cricut and other technology and maker equipment
  • Community kitchen with the potential for food programming

The Position

Under the direction of the Regional Librarian, this position provides professional leadership, management and community outreach for children and teens at the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre (CLLC). This position develops, implements, and evaluates goals, objectives, programs and services to meet the needs of children and young adults.

Duties include but are not limited to:

- Manages operations of the Children’s Library including training, directing work of staff, and providing guidance for application and interpretation of library policies and procedures;

- Acts as senior staff person as needed;

- Develops, facilitates and manages programs and services for children and young adults at the library in Charlottetown;

- Prepares and presents library programs for children (including infants, toddlers pre-school and school age), families and young adults to meet the youth programming needs;

- Develops partnerships with community organizations and agencies to develop and deliver programs at the library and as community outreach programs;

- Circulation duties-including check in/out and renewal of library materials, creation and modification of patron accounts, completing associated registrations;

- Establishes programs and services for individuals and agencies providing childcare and other professionals in the community who work with children and young adults;

- Organizes and coordinates with organizations and agencies for them to deliver programs about their services and objectives and to offer informational programs;

- Coordinates and directs province wide initiatives like Summer Reading Program; Canadian Children’s Book Week, Hackmatack and staff training;

Collection development of children’s and young adult materials for the province, including selection, weeding, and suggestion of new formats and collections;

- Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Master of Library and Information Science.

- 3-5 years public library experience including front line customer service.

- Experience delivering children’s and young adult library programs and services.

- Experience working with community groups.

- Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature.

- Demonstrated initiative, leadership and creativity.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

- Must have a good previous attendance, work record and a satisfactory Criminal Record check prior to beginning employment.

Other Qualifications:

- Bilingualism would be considered and asset.

Salary Range: $28.08 - $35.14 per hour (Level 15)

Bi-Weekly Hours: 75 hours bi-weekly / Days / Evenings / Weekends
