SIRCH Community Services is a multi-service charitable organization located in Haliburton Ontario. We are looking for a Cook to work as part of our team, committed to food security and connection. Our non profit Bistro & Bakery provides nutritious breakfasts, lunches, fresh breads and treats. Our Community Kitchen, with the help of volunteers, produces 1,400 meals each month that are given free to community residents who are struggling. The Production Kitchen prepares, cans, preserves and freezes donated fresh food.

You model gratitude, hard work and positivity, and are excited about working with a team that includes an artisan baker, pastry chef, and potager cook.

Requirements and skills

  • Proven experience as a cook
  • Knowledge of various cooking procedures and methods
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements
  • Understanding of food insecurity
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Personable with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines
  • Diploma from a culinary school will be an advantage

Responsibilities:

General

  • Adhere to all policies, protocols, and health and safety standards, and ensure anyone working in the kitcen follows all health, safety and SIRCH policies
  • Ensure the kitchen, the equipment, dishes and utensils are clean and sanitary
  • Store all food properly, marked with the “best before” or expiry date
  • Record and notify Kitchen Coordinator when stock and food supplies need to be re-ordered
  • Maintain accurate food inventories
  • Rotate stock items as per FIFO (first in, first out) procedures

Bistro

  • Plan a weekly menu (with the rest of the team) based on what is available, fresh, local and affordable
  • Ensure recipes are written down so they can be replicated
  • Handle multiple food orders in a timely manner
  • Solicit feedback from customers.

Community Kitchen

  • Provide nutritious and tasty meals incorporating local, donated produce when available
  • Ensure a variety of meals, including some for special diets.
  • Ensure volunteers follow health and safety protocols
  • Oversee and mentor volunteers in the kitchen; assign tasks.
  • Maintain a positive and close relationship with food donors

Retail/Catering

  • Make a variety of “Grab and Go” meals to sell in the Bistro and Thrift Warehouse Bancroft
  • Look for opportunities to develop our retail and catering presence

Inventory, Shopping, Protocols

  • Shop for food weekly or delegate, being aware of specials, best pricing and potential donations
  • Ensure ALL food made is costed out; fill in and file production sheets
  • Track inventory and develop pricing
  • Maintain accurate and detailed statistics
