Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Corporate Accountant and in keeping with Covenant Care’s Mission and Values, the Corporate Accountant is responsible for the accuracy of monthly and annual financial statements and schedules, accounting reconciliations, the preparation of journal entries, providing assistance on special projects, operating and capital budget maintenance, and assisting in the year-end external audit. The Corporate Accountant is also responsible for assisting with various financial analysis and reporting duties for Covenant Living.

Roles and Responsibilites

Financial Reporting

  • Assist in the preparation of year-end working papers for use by external auditors. Assist the Senior Accountant in aspects of the year-end audit as requested
  • Assistance with the preparation of the annual financial statements and notes in accordance with Not for Profit Accounting Standards and the Alberta Health Services Financial Directive for Covenant Care + Covenant Living
  • Assist in preparation of financial statements and financial reports for various projects in accordance with the related provincial grant funding and borrowing requirements
  • Compile other financial information for external parties including, but not limited to Workers Compensation Board, Canada Revenue Agency, Alberta Health Services, and FIRMS

Account Reconciliation and Analysis

  • Prepare monthly reconciliation of intercompany account and prepares and assists in the analysis
  • Prepare monthly and annual account reconciliations for specific balance sheet accounts
  • Update capital asset & deferred revenue schedules as required
  • Preparation of monthly recurring and non-recurring journal entries
  • Prepare accrual analysis to ensure accruals are completely and accurately recorded at month-end

Other Projects

  • Assists Senior Accountant or other team members with projects such as, but not limited to, implementing the month-end reconciliation binder preparation and referencing, policy updates and implementation, and best practices research, recommendation and implementation
  • Other duties as requested by the Director of Finance, Senior Corporate Accountant or Senior Financial Analyst
  • Thorough working knowledge of computer software applications including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and Adobe Acrobat required. A willingness and ability to acquire additional software skills as required
  • Intermediate to Expert level skills in Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to handle inquiries and assignments with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality required
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills required
  • Strong account reconciliation and analysis skills required
  • Work within a team–oriented approach to tasks, and ability to respond and communicate with all levels of staff required
  • Ability to distinguish independent decisions from decisions that should be referred upward is essential
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of all sensitive information required
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains financial system desired
  • Minimum 1-3 years in accounting setting required
  • Experience in account reconciliation, financial statement preparation and presentation required
  • Experience in year-end audit file preparation desired
  • Experience in medium to large not-for profit environment desired
  • Experience in health care sector desired
  • Post secondary Accounting diploma or degree (Commerce/Business) required
  • Enrollment toward an accredited accounting designation (CPA) is required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field or Minimum 1-year experience required.
