How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:
The Meadow/Invasive Management Crew Leader leads a team of 3-6 staff to implement meadow restoration and invasive management activities. Meadow restoration and invasive species activities may include site preparation, seeding, monitoring, and herbicide application. Candidates will demonstrate the relevant skills, techniques, and best management practices for meadow restoration and invasive species management. The Crew Leader leads crews and actively participates in the safe operation and maintenance of a range of tools and equipment including tractors, zero turn mowers and backpack sprayers. This position plays an integral role in the on-ground implementation of meadow restoration and ecosystem enhancement through the management of invasive species, bringing their leadership skills together with their ecological knowledge. Occupational health and safety is a major responsibility of this position.

Major Responsibilities: Perform the following tasks under general supervision:

• Provide on-site leadership, supervision and actively participate in the implementation of meadow restoration and invasive species management within TRCA’s jurisdiction.
• Operate and maintain tractors, implements, zero turn mowers, vehicles, sprayers and other assigned tools/equipment safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved project design and details.
• Ensure health and safety measures are met.
• Lead daily safety meetings, including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning.
• Perform daily vehicle and equipment inspections to ensure safe operation.
• Complete daily work reports, and project information records as assigned.
• Assist with the supervision, training, and motivation of junior staff in compliance with the TRCA Health and Safety Policies as well as all relevant Federal, Provincial, and Municipal legislation and regulations.
• Participate in the collection of field data to identify and guide habitat restoration opportunities.
• Provide general labour support.
• Other duties as assigned.

What will you need to succeed:
Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

• Post-secondary education in ecological restoration, biology, environmental science, resource management or a related field.

Experience

• Minimum 1-2 years’ experience related to major tasks; experience in ecological restoration, horticulture, commercial landscaping or related field and 1 year of supervisory experience.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

• Knowledge of native and invasive plants and proficient plant identification skills.
• Experience with farm, landscaping and/or construction equipment, including operation of small tools and larger machinery; mechanical knowledge an asset
• Ability and aptitude to work outdoors in adverse conditions.
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to lead a team and participate as team member.
• Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public
• Good physical fitness required for carrying equipment for extended durations.
• Computer proficiency with software experience (MS PowerPoint, Excel, Word, ArcMap experience an asset).
• Familiarity with mapping natural landscape features and reading maps.
• Knowledge of herbicide legislation and invasive species management practices and comfortable working with and applying herbicide; pesticide applicators license an asset
• Valid Ontario G driver’s license - Class A (R) license / trailer experience an asset.
• Standard First Aid an asset.
• Chainsaw operation certificate an asset.
• Candidates will be required to be clean shaven to properly fit a respirator.
