The WES Immigrant Youth Internship Program:

We are currently accepting applications for our Immigrant Youth Internship Program (June to August 2023). The program supports immigrant youth (i.e., first generation immigrants, second generation immigrants, refugee youth, or international students) with obtaining meaningful work experience and building their professional portfolio. This Internship Role:

Policy Analysis

  • Monitor research, news, policy, programs, legislation, and other information relevant to migration to Canada, international students, and skilled immigrant labour market integration.
  • Provide analysis and advice; identify trends, developments and opportunities on issues, programs, and policies relevant to WES’ work.
  • Conduct literature reviews and produce in-depth environmental scans and landscape studies.
  • Prepare policy submissions and other supporting documents required for public consultations.
  • Develop and write research reports, briefing notes, comments, speaking points, blogs, and other materials.

Support Stakeholder Engagement

Support stakeholder engagement work by

  • Preparing background materials, presentation decks, speaking points in preparation of external meeting.
  • Following up action items from stakeholder meetings.

General

  • Assist in the development and implementation of specials projects as assigned, and perform other duties as and when required.

  • Have a strong understanding and/or experience of issues relating to immigration.
  • Be an action-oriented person who is a self-starter and can work independently, as well as in a team.
  • Have experience working with youth.
  • Have a deep-rooted intellectual curiosity and openness to diverse ideas and perspectives.

  • Build collaborative working relationships with colleagues and external partners.

Requirements:

  • Current student from a public policy, international relations, economics, business, and/or other relevant graduate program.
  • Some professional experience focusing on workforce development, immigration, refugee resettlement, economic development, and/or social sector consulting preferred.
  • Ability to research, synthesize and integrate disparate pieces of data, analysis, and information.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills to break down complex problems into component parts and frame trade-offs in decision-making.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to convey complex information appropriately to stakeholders with different backgrounds and needs.
  • Track record of delivering high-quality, accurate work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Working Conditions:

The intern will work remotely alongside WES staff (located across Canada and the U.S.) who are also working remotely. This internship is open to candidates from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, or Nova Scotia. Interns who are based near our Toronto Office can enjoy the flexibility of working in the office or at home. WES’ Toronto office has a shared, open office environment with break-out and meeting rooms and light to moderate noise. Adherence to public health and safety Covid protocols are required to work from the WES office.


Hours: Full-time, 35 hours a week with flexible working options

Duration: 12 weeks, June to August (tentative program start: June 5)

Rate of Pay: $24 / hr

Equipment: Laptop will be provided for the duration of the internship
