Database Administrator

Position Summary
Red Deer Polytechnic is seeking a permanent full-time Database Administrator to join the Information Technology team.
This role provides expertise in Oracle and SQL Databases, Oracle Application Servers and the ERP system (Banner) to the Red Deer Polytechnic Community.
The primary responsibilities of this role would include:
  • Tracking and resolving database related incidents and requests
  • Fulfilling requests and resolving incidents
  • Reviewing service-related reports (e.g: database backups, maintenance, monitoring) on a daily basis to ensure service related issues are identified and resolved
  • Responding to database related alerts and working with the ITS team to come up with solutions to recurring problems.
This position requires an individual with strong customer service focus and initiative in order to ensure that problems and requests assigned are managed and resolved in a timely manner.
The incumbent must establish and maintain communication with end-users, IT staff, Contractors, vendors and other industry contacts to keep them updated on their requests, initiate and perform changes on production systems and proactively deal with any issues that occur.

Position Responsibilities
Oracle and SQL Database Support
  • Monitor performance of Oracle and SQL Databases & database servers.
  • Perform maintenance, upgrades, patches & defect fixes as needed/requested in test and production environments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues as they arise with assistance of ITS staff and/or vendors
  • Collaborate and communicate with end-users to ensure maintenance, upgrade and problem resolution is carried out effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure Data Integrity and Reliability including a Disaster Recovery Plan by maintaining/monitoring daily backups and data recovery procedures.
Banner Support
  • Ensure Banner ERP components are properly maintained, upgraded and available on all servers supporting the Banner ERP.
  • Perform upgrades, maintenance, patch & defect fixes for Oracle that affect the Banner ERP.
  • Create and Maintain Oracle accounts for Banner Application security and access.
  • Collaborate and communicate with end-users to ensure maintenance, upgrade and problem resolution is carried out effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert on all Oracle and Banner ERP technical aspects.
Third Party Software Support
  • Perform upgrades, maintenance, patch & defect fixes for any third-party software components that lives within or interacts with the Oracle databases or the ERP (banner).
  • Ensure connectivity and security of the application to Oracle is properly maintained, upgraded and available.
  • Collaborate and communicate with end-users, IT staff and vendors to ensure implementation, maintenance, upgrades and problem resolutions are carried out effectively and in a timely manner with all systems and applications that touch banner in any way.

Required Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a community college certificate including trades apprenticeships or equivalent
  • Required to have a minimum of 5 years Oracle Database and Apache Tomat Administration experience
  • Experience with Linux server administration and scripting


Preferred Qualifications
  • Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or three (3) year undergraduate degree plus one full additional year of university in a related program representing four years of study or equivalent
  • Banner experience an asset
  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) Designation an asset
  • Experience with Automation tools an asset

$77,716 - $90,914 annually
