Database Administrator

Location: Saint John, Fredericton, Moncton NB, Halifax NS

We have an exciting opportunity for a Database Administrator (DBA) reporting to the Manager of DBA & Integration. The Database Administrator is a key member of the JDI IT team supporting the J.D. Irving group of companies in the creation, maintenance, and changes to key organizational data.

A day in the life!

The DBA will be responsible for day-to-day management and upkeep of the MSSQL space in a large-scale environment. Supporting upwards of 300 Instance and thousands of databases, the DBA will be part of a dynamic team that works across a multitude of Business units, ranging from Forestry to Shipbuilding. All aspects of DBA support including performance tuning, security, governance and support of high availability and DR technologies will be in scope. The successful candidate will need to have an ability to multitask through complex scenarios while maintaining strong communication with business solutions and core IT groups.

Your Focus:

• Assist in production promotion by running scripts. Follow change management processes
• Maintain and strive to increase own technical knowledge, and is aware of latest developments in own area of expertise
• Provide ongoing maintenance of databases. Participate in on-call support rotation
• Solve straightforward, well-defined problems within technology of expertise
• Assist in providing Tier II application support. Ensure issues resolution is well documented on knowledge db. Create work instructions for Tier I & II support
• Understand how own tasks and activities connect with related technologies.
• Raise issues where specifications need clarification due to quality of requirements or application technical constraints
• Understand the importance of security to the enterprise
• Provide clear and timely communication to the customers and/or managers on the status of tasks especially when the task cannot be completed in the established time frame
• Seek help when faced with challenges on assigned work. Continues an adequate level of performance despite time pressure, challenges, or adversity
• Understand Daily Management processes and Database metrics
• Actively seek to increase skills level through coaching and mentoring from more seasoned DBAs

You have:

• A University degree in Computer Science, College Diploma with IT specialty or equivalent experience
• 3-5 years Demonstrated experience working with MSSQL and Oracle RDBMS, including installation and maintenance.

You are:

• Able to communicate efficiently with senior leadership on complex technical issues and topics
• Able to initiate and pursue independent work
• Familiar with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
• Highly organized and able to manage your time and prioritize appropriately
• Able to perform research and write technical documents
• Detail focused, thinking within a technical dimension typically at the database level

Bonus:

• Exposure to Oracle PL/SQL programming
• Coursework or experience with Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase
• Exposure to Oracle Applications
• Exposure to WebLogic
• Exposure to relational database design and data modelling
• Experience installing and maintaining software on a Linux server
• Experience installing and maintaining software on a Windows server
• Exposure to a Solaris server
• Programming experience in any language using SQL to accessing databases
• Certified Oracle Database Administrator or Professional
• Knowledge of Sybase and DB2 considered an asset
