About Us
Bamoonzhe Day Care is a new that opened in April 2023 in Petawawa. We are partnered with the Bonnechere Algonquin First Nation to provide childcare attached to the Herman St School. We are looking for a highly motivated Daycare Cook to inspire and be part of this new and innovative daycare centre. Our goal is to provide quality childcare for the county, share our indigenous teachings with the children and families, and provide inclusive healthy snacks and lunches.

Position: Daycare Cook

Term Contract Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Vacation: 3 weeks paid vacation during daycare closures

Work Schedule: Availability 7:00am-5:00pm

The Bamoonzhe Daycare cook is primarily responsible for preparing, cooking, and baking healthy, nutritious snacks and meals on a timed schedule.

As the Daycare cook you are responsible for the kitchen premises by keeping up to date with cleanliness, organization, meal prep, cooking, baking, dishes, and delivering foods to the program rooms on a scheduled basis. The cook is responsible for having open respectful communication with families, children, staff, and suppliers. The cook will be responsible with the weekly grocery orders and putting away groceries. The cook will create and implement recipes that are approved by the supervisor with accordance to the menu. The cook is responsible for following all guidelines and policies set out by the Renfrew County Health Unit, Bamoonzhe Daycare, CCEYA, Canadian Food Guide, and Food Handlers Course.

Other daily functions

  • Documenting fridge and freezer temperatures.
  • Document testing for chemical solutions.
  • Documenting menu changes or substitutions.
  • Taking food temperatures and documenting
  • Keeping up to date with allergy lists.
  • Organization of kitchen binder with health unit and Ministry of Education requirements.
  • Assisting in laundry and daycare cleaning
  • Know, understand, and follow all Bamoonzhe Daycare policies and procedures
  • Report to supervisor
  • Being a team player (smiles, welcoming, enthusiastic, understanding, accommodating).
  • Ensuring we meet with the food cost per child as per Bamoonzhe Daycare budget.
  • Ensure enough food was given to each program.
  • Managing food waste.
  • Assuring labels and dates are on foods being brought in from outside source (parents).
  • Dating foods once opened.
  • Communication with parents to reassure your ability and knowledge of allergies and food preferences.
  • Knowledge of all kitchen equipment to keep maintained and cleaned.
  • Know all sales reps contact info in case of emergency.
  • Flexibility within a busy daycare setting.
  • Available to work flexible shifts if required.
  • Flexibility and team player to assist program rooms if needed for ratio purposes.
  • Ensure food handler certificate is up to date.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Criminal Record Check of the Vulnerable Sector
  • Food handlers’ certificate
  • First Aid and CPR level C
  • Knowledge of Canada Food Guide
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Knowledge of nutrition and allergies
  • Organizational skills (timing, flexibilities, speed)
  • Ability to effectively manage a large food budget
  • Good health, stamina, strong back, ability to work in a hot kitchen
