Director General and Chief Programming Officer

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is seeking a Director General and Chief Programming Officer.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson of the National Film Board of Canada, the Director General and Chief Programming Officer is responsible for defining the vision and programming objectives, ensuring the implementation of this vision within the production, distribution, marketing and strategic intelligence teams, providing creative leadership to ensure that the NFB remains a national and international reference. As a member of the Executive Committee, they contribute to the overall management of the NFB, the development of strategic plans and ensure the implementation of institutional objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for all activities related to programming, production, distribution and marketing.
  • Develop an innovative go-to-market plan aligned with programming, production, distribution and marketing guidelines, allowing for an integrated and consistent application.
  • Establish partnerships with key players in the Canadian and international audiovisual sector to increase audiences, develop new distribution channels and diversify funding sources.
  • Lead and develop production, marketing and distribution and strategic intelligence teams, representing approximately 170 people.
  • Define programming targets and analyze results.
  • Define the NFB Experience, i.e. the creative experience, allowing for continuous and consistent support with creators.

Required Qualifications and Personal Qualities

  • At least 15 years of experience in team management and large-scale projects.
  • Recognized leadership, supported by several achievements, and solid experience in the production of artwork and distribution (documentaries, animations and interactive projects).
  • Strong influence, vision and change management skills, demonstrated by hands-on experience in transforming production and distribution models oriented towards audience experience.
  • Visionary, ability to build, align and mobilize high-performing and diverse teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and operationalize programming strategies.
  • Imperative: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both official languages (English and French).
  • University degree in a relevant field. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) would be an asset.
