Job Description

The Day Program & Adult Educational Assistant is responsible for engaging with clients/students to support their learning, providing opportunities for success in fostering self-esteem, promoting positive peer and adult interaction and social skills. The Assistant will also support the Program Lead (Teacher) with special need adult learners, supporting the development of skills needed to become independent, informed contributing members of the community.

The position is a part time and contingent upon funding through the fee-for-service program and has extended leaves in conjunction with the School Board schedule and academic year (e.g. Christmas, March Break, summer months). When not participating in day program responsibilities the Assistant will support the adult education department.

Day Program

  • Coordinate and plan opportunities for participants to engage in in-house social activities and promote inclusiveness in the community.
  • Prepare material in preparation for activities and small groups.
  • Implement modified programs to allow students and clients to develop meaningful academic and social skills within the school and the community.
  • Support the development of groups and programs within the needs, abilities and interests of the participants, including various formats and platforms such as one on one, small and large group settings.

Adult Education

  • Carry out specific programs in language, behaviour management and physical management as established by the Program Lead, Adult Educational Assistants and/or Manager.
  • Work with team members in providing guidance, emotional support and encouragement to all students.
  • Prepare material in preparation for lessons.
  • Assist Program Lead in supervising students during classroom activities.
  • Provide augmentative communication support as directed by the Program Lead.
  • Assist and supervise with feeding during the lunch period.
  • Assist and supervise weight bearing students with transfers, repositioning and toileting as required.
  • Attend appropriate meetings as requested by the agency representatives.

Other

  • Provide crisis prevention and intervention as required.
  • Assist with transfers, repositioning, toileting, feeding, and medications required on outings.
  • Assist with feeding Residents on an as needed basis, as requested.
  • To carry out other related duties as assigned by the Program Lead or PHM Management.

Qualifications

· DSW Certification preferred, minimum requirement of PSW Certification

· Experience and training with Special Needs Adults in an educational setting an asset

· Crisis Prevention and Intervention

· Must Have - Valid First Aid and CPR Training

· Strong written and verbal communication
