Electronic Technologist Job at City of Winnipeg
Under the general supervision of the Water Treatment Systems Engineer or designate, the Electronic Technologist is responsible to maintain process control instruments & systems and electrical equipment in proper working order in all facilities of the Water Services Division.
As the Electronic Technologist you will:
- Perform all duties required to maintain the accuracy and proper working order of process control instruments & systems, including equipment of mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic nature, such as regular operational checks, calibrations and preventative maintenance.
- Perform extensive troubleshooting for malfunctions, using complex electrical and electronic equipment.
- Perform all required repairs, which may include part replacement and/or actual part fabrication.
- Design, build, install, start-up and tune control systems.
- Install new equipment and instrumentation, performing all final adjustments and calibrations to place the system into operation.
- Maintain, configure and troubleshoot microwave radio communication systems and equipment utilized for SCADA and remote telemetry systems.
- Maintain, configure and troubleshoot security systems and equipment including alarm, access control and video surveillance systems.
- Calibrate and adjust a wide variety of equipment in the field and in the shop, including safety equipment such as personal monitors for dangerous gasses and analytical instruments for monitoring water quality.
- Select and order equipment, materials and tools.
- Maintain service logs and files covering all process control equipment to facilitate ordering of parts and service and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, document, program and configure PLC, DCS, RTU, and integrated process control systems.
- Document and instruct City personnel in proper operating procedures for new and modified process control systems.
- Produce as-built wiring diagrams, operational diagrams and part drawings for any new or existing equipment.
- Conduct continuous improvement and tuning of process control systems to achieve better regulation and reliability of processes, and improve safety in accordance with current codes, legislation, and best practices.
- Review technical drawings and project documentation to ensure completeness, accuracy and quality of engineering designs for process control systems.
- Assist in training other employees.
- May assist and/or oversee one or more trade persons, or other City employees, during installations or major repairs.
- Ensure compliance with Worker’s Compensation Legislation, Human Rights Legislation, Workplace Safety and Health Legislation and safe work practices.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as assigned.
Your education and qualifications include:
- Successful completion of Grade 12 or GED or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Diploma from a recognized Community College Engineering Technology Program in Instrumentation, Electronic, Electrical or Computer.
- Valid Manitoba Power Engineer Certificate, Class 4 or better, is preferred.
- Must possess a broad knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, electricity and electronics.
- Experience in process control systems, programmable logic controls, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition equipment (SCADA/HMI) and instrument maintenance.
- Experience troubleshooting various equipment and systems using complex electrical and electronic equipment.
- Ability to design, assemble and implement basic control circuits.
- Experience planning, organizing, documenting and reporting on instrument and process control system maintenance activities.
- Proficiency in preparing and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and specifications.
- Experience with AutoCAD Electrical is preferred.
- Experience using personal computers and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts including suppliers, contractors, and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
- Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work.

- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Active member in C.T.T.A.M. (Certified Technicians & Technologists Association of Manitoba) at the Technologist level.
- A Limited Specialized Trade Electrical Licence (M Licence – Technologist) or better is required.
- A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Must be physically capable of performing all of the duties of the position including, but are not limited to: ability to lift 50 lbs., repetitive movement, crouching, kneeling, standing, climbing stairs & ladders, continuous walking and working outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions.
